They're both so unbelievably remote, and sparely settled. It's mostly just dead space. There's something truly horrible about that. Who even knows what is out there, outside of towns and the occasional city?

Just because people don't live there doesn't mean it's an arctic apocalyptic wasteland.

lol you think nature is horrifying? I did a river trip in Northwest Territories, it's all idyllic forests and lakes and quiet and stars, and animals that are living just as fulfilling, interesting and complex lives as you or me

city people are so soft

I remember seeing a map of Maine that suggests most of the state is like that as well.

That comment about it not being an arctic apocalyptic wasteland was very funny.

But it kind of is like that. Just dead space, filled with dangerously low temperatures, mean animals, and frozen lakes. From what I've seen, it really IS beautiful, but in a scary, unseemly way.

It's really not that scary. It's beautiful, untamed nature.

Being out in the boonies during the winter can be terrifying. It's cold and pitch black, with a complete absense of sound that weirds me out. Plus with the snow out everything starts blending together in a big mass of white, especially as it gets darker.

That being said, living in one of the main areas like Anchorage or Wasilla is the same as anywhere else, just colder and darker for most of the year. It's only when you go out into the rest of the state during winter that you get hit with the "alone in the wilderness" vibe.

My parents have a crappy cabin out on a very remote lake, so I have some spooky stories.

Anchorage is like any other town. just colder. But yes, the interior of the state is pretty sparse. There are still places in Alaska i am pretty sure no human has ever walked. which is kinda cool to me.

@JTilly It's called Aurora Lake. The closest town is Talkeetna and there are a couple other cabins around. I've never seen another person out there in the last ten years, besides my family.

I'm trying to move to someplace like that

I want impending death from cold 10 months a year

That's my natural habitat

It was 40 degrees last night here in TN and I went to the store in basketball shorts and a tee shirt and it's getting annoying of everyone always asking me if i'm cold.

Thinking about moving up there. I just want to be left alone, but I'm not sure how I would make money. Eating would be fine, plenty of game in Alaska

Just move to Wasilla or Palmer. There's lots of places that are remote out there without going full wild man. Even if you want to build a cabin and live out in the middle of nowhere, the long winter means you'll still need money for supplies. A lot of people live part time cabin/town. Just keep in mind these towns can be very rural, people will leave you alone.
