Still has the best pedestrian riot cheat code. Everyone had molotov's, m16's, and rpg's. Driving around the city like that was crazy fun. Unfortunately I ruined my friends saved game because I added that code on there and didnt know it would stay forever if you saved it and there was no way of removing it.

I was a fan of 1 and 2 so I was waiting for another GTA. I remember all the hype over it when it came out. All the kids were talking about all the crazy stuff you could do on there. I didn't have a PS2 yet so I had to suffer and imagine how the game was like. When my best friend got to play it I basically interrogated him about it.

It wasn't very long after until I did get a PS2 and GTA3. My eleven year old self was absolutely mesmerized. It was as awesome as people were saying it was.

I played and beat it--my first time and my first GTA game--three years ago.** The visuals are dated (inevitable for any game...), but the mechanics are solid/fun.

** One of the hazards of a very deep backlog.

It was such a revolutionary game. It wasn't the first open world game or even first game you could drive around anywhere. However, it certainly felt like the first game where a city felt alive as though it was main character of the game.

I remember playing it for the first time and being blown after hearing so much about it. It was one of those times where everything you dreamed of came true. I would think about the game every day untilI I got a PS2.

It really goes back to how Rockstar mafe Liberty City. Eeach neighborhood had a different vibe. Different cars and npcs would show up depending on where you were which at time was a huge deal. The full commercials and products you'd see on billboards. The variety of music stations. The city was perfectly designed too.

The chaos you could cause or simply just observe felt like the first time in a game where there was some sort of life if I even left the game.

It was the cultural zeitgeist of the early 00s all wrapped into one.

I loved the hell out of that game. I remember when my uncle was visiting and I was just driving around trying to play it straight so he didn't tattle on my my mom that I was playing a violent game (even though I played it around her all the time). Then one of the NPCs said something really dirty and I was like "screw it" >_>.

I asked my mom for Metal Gear Solid 2. She looked at the back of the case, put it back on the shelf, and told me to pick something else. So I asked for Grand Theft Auto III instead, neither of us knowing what it was. I am not sure why she decided I couldn't get MGS 2 but I am guessing she saw "nudity" (Raiden naked cartwheels) and decided it would be too inappropriate lmao

GTA3 is still one of my absolute favorites. Got the platinum trophy on the PS4 version a couple years ago.

I didn't have a PS2 at the time, but I distinctly remember being at my friends house when he got it and watching him play it. I remember it looked really cool, but I wasn't dying to play it. I had a PS2 by the time Vice City came around and I really enjoyed that, but when I went to try and play 3 I just was not having fun. I think VC kind of ruined it for me

I remember in high school, someone brought their PS2 to class on a free day to play it a couple of weeks after it came out, and I was absolutely floored by it. I've always kept up with gaming news, and somehow never kept up with GTA3 because A. I thought it was just another driving game and B. The first two weren't really that interesting.

It already looked more fun than I expected, but when he brought up the map, my jaw dropped. I had seen open-ended worlds in games before, but never in a city with that much attention to detail.

As a single code I agree, but I'd argue the give pedestrians weapons code and pedestrians riot code together in San Andreas was the single most amazing experience of that generation.

It did but if your resolution settings were off then the crosshair would be off center and you couldn't aim right lol. You could move though I think that was an advantage over PS2 (iirc you couldn't aim shoot and move at the same time).

You must not have played it the day it released. GTA 3 seriously changed gaming forever and achieved something that had never been done before on that level. It's one of the most revolutionary games ever created.

It's pretty baffling this has never happened again after the PS2 games. It was so bonkers. It's broken and ridiculous and that's what makes it fun. More open world games should think with that logic.
