If they are playing a multiplayer game or some trash game that no one would ever want to play like Sonic 06 then it has potential, but if they are playing anything remotely decent, unlike most Let's Plays where you just watch someone else play the game, you also have to hear their awful opinions throughout every episode. I'd MUCH rather just play the game myself, especially if the game is polarizing or controversial in any way.

I'm not a fan of Let's Plays overall, but as GG is usually playing games I'm not interested in playing, I don't mind them. Dan's funny.

Channels like Game Grumps and Oney Plays are not intended to be expert playthroughs or even for sure finish the game. Most of the time they don't. I am not into game grumps that much anymore but I follow Oney Plays started by a guy who used to be friends with Arin. (They had a fight i think)

And I watch them to hear their stories and jokes and to just bullshit around. The game is secondary in the experience

Nah they are pretty funny. But I do agree I prefer them playing multiplayer games or bad games. Actually I do like when they play my favorite games too, even though they are really bad at them. Like watching Dan play Paper Mario was super painful but still super fun to watch.

I love how once the dust settled on his actually good Megaman vs Megaman X video, which he probably thought about all his life leading up to it, people realized just how basic his line of thinking is down the line.

Honestly, really fucking cringey when actually nothing offensive is happening and Arin starts to go off on a rant about some shit that's not even obstructing his play

This series actually showed one thing I utterly loathe about Arin. Dan was clearly really excited about it (the fact he asked to play it at all is proof of that), but Arin constantly shit on it. He does that a lot too. Like Dan will be super impressed with something like Spider-Man, but Arin just scoffs about all those newfangled bullshit mechanics that are terrible because you have to read two lines of tutorial.

Yes but there are some games that I don't feel like playing even though they are good. Like I'm fine with watching a Let's Play of a game like Dark Souls because the game is cool but not interesting enough for me to invest my time in it.

But I would never watch a Game Grumps Dark Souls series because with a normal Let's Play vid the person playing is neutral, while Game Grumps vids are filled with them not paying attention or following instructions and spouting awful opinions because it's funny.

Actually, their Bloodborne series is apparently alright.

The big reason GG can be shit is because there are some games Arin clearly doesn't want to play, but he feels like he has to because it's popular and will make more money. So you'll get an entire episode of them doing absolutely nothing because Arin refuses to edit out dead air because then he'd have to spend more time playing the game.

Even with Sonic 06 I guarantee the game is not as broken as they made it look. They absolutely play terribly on purpose for laughs. I know that in the Sonic Adventure DX series they repeated this glitch in the first level over and over again for laughs and it made it look much worse than it actually is. And the (original release) DX version is extra glitchy to begin with.

I've long been a fan of Arin. I hung out with him at anime cons and fighting game tournaments a few times before he blew up on Newgrounds and he was always a cool dude. But I've never been able to get into Game Grumps. I'd rather watch an anime girl who's barely touched a video game before struggle through a hard-ass NES game than suffer through Game Grumps. The video games are never the focus with them, except when they are, and there's just no optimum level of "fun" and "video games".

I just finished listening to them playing Mario Party and while they gripe about mechanics and stuff, they talk about way more non-game related things for that particular set of videos. You see what you wanna see, I guess.

"Often" is not "always."

People use the "it's like a podcast!" defense for videos like Majora's Mask when entire episodes are devoted to Arin bitching about it.

But how often is often? Would be interesting to see someone run the stats on it, but it's ultimately pointless. I say they use games as a backdrop to talk about both the game and other things more often than bitching; you imply the opposite. Does it matter who's right? Not really.

it isnt just modern games. i watched some of his ocarina of time lets play and the vast majority of his complaints about the game in that sequelitis video stem from how much he sucks at the game.

Honestly I only started watching their videos in the past couple of years, so that isn't really true. I don't know who else I could watch. Arin can be annoying at times, but he still says enough funny stuff to be enjoyable. And I just have to love Dan because he's adorable.

The only other let's plays I've ever seen were the GameExplain guy playing the Paper Mario games, and he was just kind of wholesome and simple without really being funny.

Yeah nobody watches GX for their Let's Plays. They commonly do pretty badly in terms of viewership. But it's really not that hard to find a streamer who's doing more interesting streaming than these guys. Literally anybody from OfflineTV, 90% of the entire VTuber community, Smallant and other more entertainment focused speedrunners, Alpharad, you name it.

Really no reason to watch somebody who's annoying when you can just watch other people
