Let's say 5 years pass. We look back on 2020. Do you think it will still seem like the worst year in relatively recent history? Or do you think perspective will soften how we think about it?

This is all assuming that by fairly early next year, we will have basically beaten the virus. A combination of vaccinations, places reopening, life getting back to normal, and so on (which seems likely).

Uh... Over 1.3 million people dead world-wide. Over 250,000 dead in the US. The perception will not soften. In fact, the perception will get worse as we look back and realize all the things that could have easily been done to mitigate the death toll.

But millions die every year, due to various problems.

Your trolling isn't very subtle, but I will play along for just a moment longer...

Just because millions of people die every year doesn't mean that steps that can be taken shouldn't be taken to prevent other people from dying.

If anything, I think the main thing people will remember will be all the lockdowns, and places being closed in general. I think they will remember that more than the deaths, or even the massive economic crash.

I think that is what the majority of people's attention is focused on right now. With time the perspective will shift to the massive number of deaths.

we turned 9/11 into a national tragedy and started two foreign wars over it, all because 3000+ people died one day. has time dampened that event?

what it hasn't done is returned us to pre-homeland security/tsa levels of security theater...

You shouldn't dismiss him outright. I think he's saying that bad things happen every year, but when a virus finally hits mainland America and everyone is affected, it suddenly becomes worthy of being called a "bad year".
