Programming genius comes up with a great way to play Smash Melee online, spends years working on it gives it to community. Requires emulation but everyone loves it. As soon as a big tournament tries to use it because of covid, Nintendo shuts them down cause emulation. They're basically killing the Melee community cause Melee before relied on in person tournaments, so this is the only way to have a legitimate Melee tourny, and Nintendo is killing it.

This also affected Ultimate, as the entire tournament was cancelled, not just the Melee portion of it.

The melee community should really focus on getting all their players to take daily showers before they try and tackle online play

As much as I sympathize with the community and think Nintendo is being stupid...

...it strikes me as a bit naive to host a major tournament using third-party emulation, which is in a legal gray area at best. Like what did they think was going to happen? <_<

While I don't disagree, in Nintendo's statement, their concern was also about players using pirated copies of the game.

Like... Melee's been out of print for over a decade now, Nintendo has not made the game available for purchase in any shape or form since, has expressed no plans to rerelease it, and gets absolutely no money from the second-hand market. What do they care so much if some people have to "obtain" the game through illegitimate means if Nintendo gets nothing out of it at all except exposure?

I dont disagree at all. Nintendo is an awful, awful company that stumbles into success by accident with gimmicks and nostalgia.

tons of companies would happily cut their balls off and become eunuchs just to have a game as popular and evergreen as Melee, and under any other publisher Melee would have had an online-capable port by now.

Nintendo also got like 40+ twitch streamers banned for 48 hours because they were playing Hyrule Warriors "early", even though the streamers in those regions (like Australia) already had HW released on the E-Shop. It's like they don't understand how time zones work. A double whammy yesterday.

I don't think it's something Nintendo should have bothered to act on, but I'm not sure if it's something they can choose to ignore either. You need to enforce your copyright to some extent, so it depends on if it was recommended by lawyers or it's just some salty higher up who can't let people have fun.

Nintendo is known to have a very conservative business practices and to be very protective of their brand and image. So this is no surprise for me, the thing that gets me though is that Nintendo has yet to do a rerelease of Melee in any other form. Melee thrives from in person tournaments and this was the only way to do a Melee Tournament online, like Nintendo is making it harder for the Melee community.

Maybe this. What if they had let this slip then it would have set precedent for allowing emulated games in tournaments?

Well the community is doing a $10k charity tournament where the winner decides which charity gets the money, all played on the Slippi mod.

we will see if Nintendo shuts this down too

This isn't surprising. Nintendo doesn't like like their fans but need them to be drones to survive.

Nintendo was also intimidated by AM2R and didn't want competition with their mediocre 3DS remake so they shut that fan game down.

At least SEGA and Capcom does what Nintendon't. ;)
