I've been resistant to getting one for a long time but frankly I've reached a point where the convenience of having dozens of books in a thin tablet is too good to pass up. I'm not up to date at all on what models/brands are out there. I just need something simple for books, not a full on tablet computer. I've got a decent laptop if I need a computer on the go, but its a bit too bulky to use for reading. I'm looking to buy one online probably Black Friday/Cyber Monday

If you need a dedicated reader and nothing else, Kindle Paperwhite is the way to go

The backlight is great, and reading electronic ink won't give you the headache you might get from a normal screen

This this this

I've been using the Paperwhite as my ereader for quite a few years now and it's the fuckin' best. Perfect size and price. If mine ever dies I'll replace it instead of getting a different one.

If you get something like the Kobo Clara HD it has access to OverDrive, which will also let you borrow ebooks from your local library if they participate in it.

How are kindle paperwhites with downloaded epubs and such? I have a pretty big library of epub and mobi books. Legal library, nothing pirated. I'd like to buy a paperwhite and move the library over to it. Would this work?

Yes, I recommend using Calibre (free eReader organizer) for this purpose. It has conversion plug-ins you can download to properly put the books onto the Kindle w the right format and chapters/interactivity.

What the fuck, there's an "ad supported" option on the Paperwhite lmao?

Yeah, definitely going the Overdrive route. Can the Paperwhite use Overdrive?

That's what I thought this topic was going to be about going into it, tbh.

Yes Amazon sells some hardware in the US with cheaper models that inject ads everywhere. There's Fire Tablets with thesame thing.

The Paperwhite can use Overdrive but can only check out Kindle-compatible books.

So "ad supported" chips off like 20-30 bucks (maybe more now, I haven't bought one for a while) to put small banner ads on the menus and the Screensaver. You can customize your own screensaver if you buy the non ad supported version. The ads aren't intrusive though and don't affect reading at all. It's really just a preference thing.

And yes, Kindle can use Overdrive

The ads are not even a bother. I'd save the money and buy the ad version; which I already did

I have a 2019 Paperwhite and its dope. Better than my old Nook mainly cuz of the backlight. I also second using Calibre. The ads are basically just a screensaver and if you buy a cover (which you should) you wouldn't ever really notice them lol

Supposedly you can complain to support and they'll remove the ads after purchase too.

Currently leaning towards the Kobo Libre H20. I don't really need the waterproofing but the larger screen seems nice and the fact that it supports more file formats/epubs is a real selling point. Anyone have any thoughts?

That's a good choice. If you don't need it now you can probably get it on a decent sale.

E: Unless it is on sale for BF >_>
