Companies that focus on their employees doing remote work whenever possible, both established companies and new ones, are going to succeed over the companies that lease office space and force their workers to commute every day. Those companies that hold on to this old idea are going to fall behind and fade away

it's almost over for rat race culture

I think there are enough extroverts that will want to go back to the office that things will return mostly to normal, with tele-working a reward for valued employees.

Depends which is more financially sufficient. The capitalist decide this. They don't give 2 shits rather you have the comforts of working from home or they pack you into a cubicle. Whichever sends more money their way is what we'll end up with.

I fucking hope so. Being able to work from home would be a dream come true.

But Ive also become extremely jaded in some ways because of my job. Ive been working way too long at a retail job for a company that goes out of its way to make its employees unhappy. Like, Im assigned to a store in our chain thats fifteen minutes from where I live, but they have me going to a store thats forty minutes away. They said it would be temporary, but here we are a year later.

Im finishing college soon but now with Coronavirus, Im afraid to look for a new job because I dont want to get it then lose it.

i think its the exact opposite, wfh will make the rat race even worse.

companies have figured out that work from home = living at work. you are expected to be available all the time now, i routinely get meetings scheduled for 8am or 7pm because they know you're home, emails i need to action late at night etc. plus now that everything is remote, if it stays this way and productivity doesnt go down then you are now competiting against applicants all across the US, not just those living in your area.

Remote work gives you so much freedom you can work anywhere in the country. Companies that allow working remotely will have a crazy advantage over those that demand you to be in office

Remote work whenever possible is more cost efficient though.

>don't have to lease as much office space
>don't have to spend as much on middle management, HR, etc.
>Some companies will get away with paying less as a work from home tax, at least temporarily

But on the flip side threat companies are going to try to demand more of your time and make people feel enslaved in their homes. Unless workers make sure there are hard boundaries. Workers need to make sure they aren't taken advantage of

so you'd need to be productive to get a job? seems reasonable to me

If there's not constant progressive labor movements then companies will just catch up on remote work. More privacy invasive sorftware and software that can track your eye movements to see if you're glued to the screen. Big banker economists have already suggested remote workers having to pay 5% more tax. Some companies have suggested to pay workers less depending on where they live. The capitalist system will fight all along the way against the new freedoms of remote work.

There is merit to having a physical office presence for occasional meetings, visits, group gatherings, etc.

But the idea that everyone needs to be in the same physical location from 9-5 five days a week is outdated and the death of that is one silver lining from all this.

(mind you this is speaking only to those jobs that can be done remote. obviously does not apply to jobs that require physical with equipment or devices or whatever)

i'm an introvert and we've been doing this shit since april. I'm ready to be back in the office once or twice a week. But def happy that even when we do open the office me and my team will all be remote mostly.

If you want less toast shitposting, you want offices opened back up.

California pay in some plains state would be really nice.

Facebook already established the precedent of cost-of-living wage variance for remote work. You're gonna get Alabama pay for working for a California company if you don't live in California.

EDIT: Hell, if you move, you'll probably take a pay cut:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2020/05/21/facebook-pay-cuts-employees-could-have-reduced-salaries-if-they-move/5239532002/
Facebook employees, who will continue to work from home for an expected five to ten years, will receive cuts if they move to less expensive areas.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced the company will allow most of its employees to request a permanent change in their jobs to let them work remotely. The catch? Facebook will localize employees' compensation based on where each employee chooses to live. Zuckerberg confirmed the salary fluctuations in most cases, expected reductions via Facebook Live.
