Mumble Rap is a thing, but it's often attributed to rappers who people don't like. Actual mumble rappers like Future and Gucci Mane exist. But so many times I have seen people call The Migos mumble rappers, when they're not.

And no, Gen-Z didn't ruin rap, so long as we have Joyner Lucas, Cole, Webby, Kendrick, Tyler The Creator, Trippie, etc.

I don't like most of it, but it's easy to forget that there was a lot of garbage rap when I was young, too. We just don't remember the garbage.

From a socio-political standpoint, mainstream rap music was "ruined" back in the '00s - when the culture lost its subversive roots and started being a glorification of capitalism, rather than a rags to riches narrative of climbing out of poverty or dealing with struggles. It was also that same time that rap/hip-hop got strongly appropriated and added/mixed into pop music, starting to replace conventional pop music and pop punk with a rap/pop hybrid.
Honestly a lot of the newer rap music is way better than the garbage of the early '00s -- because its creation and sound are at least somewhat subversive, even if its message isn't -- with Soundcloud, ex-pop punkers going rap, heavily tattooed/body modded rappers, etc. Plus that style over substance stuff sounds fucking good. I'd listen to 21 Savage a million times over before I'd ever willingly listen to later Ja Rule or Ludacris, who didn't have style or substance.
But I'm saying this as an outsider of the culture, and there are obviously still rappers that do substance over style - like mentioned in post #6.

Honestly that all really began in the 90's. It's just that by the '00s it was completely shot.

I remember hearing Puff Daddy for the first time-- you know, not featured in one of Biggie's tracks. That's when I knew it was over.

Those 4 songs I know from right now. Nope. Those aren't it. But back when I wasn't lazy and actually dug into some of the music, that's when it was good.

As a lazy 30-something, rap sucks. But back when I was an energetic 18 year old, now that's when it was something.
