I have a USB hub and I've tried putting a couple of hard drives in, about 1TB each but they won't register. Smaller USB's and phone chargers work fine though

I can't think of any other reason for it not to work

USB 1 & 2 hubs can only be assumed to spread about 2.5 watts of power to everything plugged in. That probably isn't enough for the HDD to spin up.
