but also, because of the physics engine. i suppose a lot of people will say player freedom as well but i found that to be a negative - game needed direction imo

I bought it, put a couple hours into it, got pissed off at the weapon breaking and "feel" of the game. Never touched it since.

it's pretty close to a perfect game for me. loved the narrative, exploration, opened ended design, puzzles, logical way the world worked, combat, graphics, etc

It's one of those games that you sort of need to come to love through your own actions more so than it naturally being the best game ever. If you dislike random exploration for hours or messing with a robust physics engine and just play the game straight through to the end naturally, you'll likely come out thinking it's good and not great. If you lose yourself for fifteen hours on a random tangent and realize you were originally doing something completely different, you'll likely come out thinking it was great.

It just depends on what you like as a gamer I think. People getting snippy at others for not thinking a game they love is as great as they think it is, is just the nature of the beast when it comes to fanbases I think. I know some people get that way with Smash Bros., lol.

As for me I thought it was great with obvious room for improvement that I hope BotW2 takes the chance to implement. Stuff like more substantial side content, more story, better and longer dungeons, different weapon durability system that doesn't get as annoying...that kinda stuff.

I was just lukewarm on it until 30-40 hours in, when I realized I was still discovering major new things in that world just from lazy exploration. Looking at something in the world, knowing that there's something you have to do there to open up a new shrine, and then piecing it together for yourself just based on the sparse clues available... I love that shit.

I have played every main Zelda game. BotW is by far my favorite and I enjoyed it the most.

I agree that it's a good, not great game. Definitely didn't feel like it was anywhere near as good as a lot of people seem to think, but was still enjoyable.

It doesn't, but instead you're under the mercy of crappy gacha mechanics to get good weapons/characters.

I loved all 200 hours I put in, but I don't think I'd ever replay it (then again I haven't replayed any of the console Zeldas and don't think I ever will)

I also hate that I ended up with so many food items and stuff that I never used because I kept saving them "for the end" but then the end came before I knew it and I was too strong to need them.

What's worse is that all these thousands of food items and shit are completely removed if you try to do the trial of the sword, a tedious challenge with a rather crappy reward. It's like, when am I gonna use these items if not for the sword trial dlc? I also can't carry them over to a new game in master mode, and I sure as shit am not gonna recollect all those items from scratch, I don't have it in me again.

And what's up with only 1 save slot? Wtf?

These are most of my big nitpicks for an otherwise very enjoyable experience.

Breath of the Wild was a big departure from the old 3D Zelda formula that had become obviously dated and stale with Skyward Sword. Also Breath of the Wild is incredibly large in scale, less limited and restrictive in terms of progression, and has less hand holding and is more punishing and challenging. The game isn't flawless but it shook up the Zelda formula and helped the series evolve, catch up to other action adventure games in some aspects and become more modernized, and future Zelda games will be all the stronger because of it.

Ok so I bought a Wii U just for this game a few weeks ago

I will say The initial intro is cool, now that I been playing it in this Quiet ass world....it feels kinda odd, no sense of direction

to be fair I am still 2 hours into it maybe?, so far it feels Bland.

The Windwaker HD kinda seems more appealing, and action meele is way more fun and story seems more cool RIGHT OFF THE BAT

You know what BotW has that competing, open world RPGs don't? Charming, memorable, and likable characters.

The physics engine is fun to play with and allows you for you to do so casually or gamebreaking.

Side Quests are satisfying and add depth to the world you're in.

You can climb everything which adds a huge exploration factor.

Etc

It's a fun and ok game, but only a mid-tier Zelda game.

I always found it funny when people called the game innovating with stuff like grass burning and turning raw meat into cooked meat by throwing it near a fire. As if Minecraft/Far Cry/Metal Gear Solid wasn't doing that kind of things at least 7 years prior but no it's Nintendo who thought up all that kind of stuff /sarcasm.
