5 felt like a downgrade from 4 to be honest. Literally the only thing saving 5 from being the worst FF is the job class system.

FF5 in the Blue Dragon engine would be a thing of beauty.

I'm really unimpressed with 4. Storywise i can barely tell the difference from 5, and gameplaywise it just feels like you have a lot less agency without something like the job system.

Play it on PSP.
There's a great postgame that doesn't exist on SNES or DS (but most of it's there on GBA), then there's a bunch of "and also their kids" content you won't care about, but the gameplay is pretty good.

I've tried to get through this game so many times on different platforms. The issue isn't lack of postgame content, it's that the game can't keep me interested. I've gotten to the moon several times but just gave up.

I remember playing like two episodes of the after years and I was quite pleasantly surprised. IIRC it added some twists that made the gameplay a little more fun. But then those were two short quests, not sure how it would hold up in the long run.

IV by metric miles, but it's also one of my top 3 FFs. V is good but I never even got past the first world.

And yeah, PSP version is the way to go. I'd give V more of an edge if we're only comparing SNES versions

4 has a lot of nostalgia for me. I've tried a couple of times to get through 5, i usually lose interest in it. The job system isn't enough to save it, as I played FFT first and the job system there is so much better.

5 is the most fun Final Fantasy in the mainline series - only the Tactics games have better gameplay IMO

4 is my favorite game of all time. It is probably pure nostalgia but I play through at least 3 times a year. I'm not saying it's the best game ever made but it is my favorite. I really like 5 too I just didn't play it until later in life which is probably why it doesn't hold as memorable of a place.

If I had to pick one to replay right now, it would be V, definitely. It's certainly flawed, but unique enough among the SNES games that I'd enjoy replaying it.

I've played through IV at least twice on various systems, and tbh I never truly enjoyed it; my nostalgia-laden franchise loyalty is to FF VI, which I find superior to IV on just about every level, and the whole time I was playing IV I wished I was playing VI instead. The combat was never particularly enjoyable, and the long string of B-list party member self-sacrifices for the sake of a dramatic moment wore thin after the second occurrence. I respect the game for its contribution to the growth of the medium and for being the stepping-stone that led to FF VI and beyond, but I have little to no desire to revisit it.

FF5 has the replay value that FF4 outright lacks.

Also I contend that the DS version (also steam) is the best one, because of the augment/inheritance system and the redesigned boss and random battles which are far more dynamic/difficult.

If augments were removable and not dependent on set up, it would have been great.
As-is, you need a spreadsheet to work out who gets what and when to 'chain' them, over three runs, if you want the best out of it.
