Many of the FF8 cast sucks and the overall story is much worse and possibly the gameplay as well.

VIII has a lot of cool and some even bad ass concepts that are far out and really cool. But a lot of those, maybe even most of them, are executed badly.

And then it has the god awful orphanage plot.
It's not so much that it's bad because they all used to know eachother, it was the way they executed it that was horrible. There was no hints or signs throughout the game that GF's made you lose your memories. All of that together was nuts.

But then you have a bad ass character design like Sorceress Edea, and the other sorceresses, Liberi Fatali, fucking gunblades, Man with a Machine gun, Renzokuken, the summons were bad ass, and the characters didn't look like lemmings with horse hooves like they did in 7.

Think about all of that and then remember that they also threw in time travel into the mix, outer space, the random school shit with NORG. WTF. It has so much random stuff in it! How is ANYONE supposed to know how to feel?

This is like getting a bad ass burger and dunking it into your cereal which also has powerade and beer in it.

VIII was designed to be a love AND hate it kind of game. It was all over the fucking place. Naturally there will be a major divide because of that.

And it also came out right after the most popular FF.

.....ah i am pretty sure the ingame info tab had a foreshadowing about it in there but then again due to the game being rushed and cut content i can't blame people feeling the plot feeling disjointed

Seriously though, the gameplay is nothing special. For all the "junction is complicated" is this topic, it's pretty much draw all the magic you can then see which make the numbers the biggest. So level grinding is replaced by magic grinding. Whoop dee doo.

Care to point out the people saying that junctioning is complicated? I went through the whole topic and didnt see a single person say that they thought it was complicated. The closest to it was my post in which I said it confused some people and completely breaks the game for others.

I should have instead said that it wasnt presented in the plot in a meaningful way or even at all. Like something should have happened to one of the characters where they forgot something crucial and it should have been presented as a mystery of some sort.

It could have been done well or at least much better than it was. Also I did not know the game had cut content. :p

i get what you mean but as i said the game was rushed(like MGS5) which made the team dump most of the world lore in the info tab and garden pc hack one of the character had most of her growth in there and most players would miss it if they don't check it
and also norg was foreshadowed as well there

It maybe not have been said in this very topic but FF8 lovers have definitely said people who don't like the game just doesn't understand the junction system.

And people who usually likes FF8 seems to relate or at least resonate with Squall, thinking he's some deep complex character.

Cloud just doesn't have memory lost. He went through a lot more than Squall did even before the beginning of FF7 game.

I'm not even sure if was definitively established in the game that GFs mess with memory. It was presented more as a theory, with one of them being like "well maybe we don't remember bc GFs," and Irvine being like, "makes sense, I don't use GFs and I remember fine" and then I don't think it's brought up again.

Complicated might have been an exaggeration. Unintuitive or complex might have been better?

I loved FF8 but it was a really messy game, from the battle system to the story, so it makes sense.

disagree on the battle system i loved enemy's lving up along with me which forced me to play with the game mechanic's pros and cons but i get why pure rpg fans weren't happy about it and as for the story this was square soft still being clunky with their english translation plus the game being rushed (just like chrono cross and xenogears)

First impressions are everything so they say...

FF7 had a simple battle system that people understood without much explaining with an explosive opening that just had you in the action straight away.

FF8 had a more complicated battle system that people didn't understand even after the whole first part of the game explaining it. It starts with you at school having some lessons. Very slow to get going.

Personally I like 8 more, imo it's far less tedious to play than 7 (first part excepted) and the story is good (ok it's a bit silly at times but that's not unique for an FF is it?). The drawing magic and using GFs criticisms are overstated or just wrong. The music is very strong too, felt a bit more refined in a way (I guess because the instrument samples were better?).

Overall I can see why people love 7 so much over 8, I think it has such a grand sense of scale, it felt epic. I'm not sure 8 conjures up that same feeling but it's still fantastic.

Anyway, even if NORG was foreshadowed I don't think anybody likes that part of the game. I didn't give a crap about Cid's business matters. Cid Kramer xD. Is he related to Cosmo Kramer?
