I love the man's mission and I'm really excited for what the future holds for us but I don't deny that the man has been scarily odd in his support for fascism, continuing production through covid, denying how serious the disease is, amongst other things.

Yeah I started noticing that he was a regular ol rich asshole when he started talking out of his ass as a younger and way less informed version of Ray Kurzweil on the subject of AI and robotics. I've been in AI since 2008 and robotics since 2012 so I picked up on the bullshit as soon as he said it and this was at least a few years before the pedo incident.

Internet ate up his words though because he makes the dank maymays so he's a relatable rich guy.

How are those fully autonomous cars he promised in 2016 going huh? Looks like you can't just vomit at the mouth and presto, magically have something that the military and an asston of universities have been researching since the 90s appear.

I don't condone those Tweets he made. I think they were short-sighted and believe he'd be better off without a Twitter account. Though I do admire the work he's done in setting up and running his particular companies. Not sure how that makes me a cultist.

That's the crazy thing. The big car manufactuers were far ahead of tesla in the self driving realm, they just never deployed the tech to the public beacuse it's a huge legal grey area that tesla just said "fuck it" to.

Tesla is just an irresponsible and anticonsumer company with it's stance on right to repair, and their "recertification" (aka, hold your vehicle hostage for a six figure blackmail demand) process.

It's probably because his followers have started to treat him as an authority on science. In the end Musk is a business executive that believes in advancing tech that should benefit humanity without immediate profit motivation. And he has the skills to excite the general public and investors alike (which is extremely valuable btw, don't think I'm trying to undermine his importance here).

But what you're seeing is probably that many people simply didn't care about him until he pissed them off. Or he got too influential for them to simply ignore. I also think actual scientists don't like how much credit he seems to get in the public sphere. But people who were positive about him before still probably going to see his value to society.
