I think numbers would be a lot easier to understand.

it's been forever since I actually looked at a physical game

I think the current system is fine. Some ratings have been confusing in the past like these examples:

Zone of the Enders series being rated M (from what I have seen a T rating makes more sense)

Syphon Filter 2 and 3 being rated M (the first one was T)

SSBM being rated T (an E like the first one would have been fine, as the E10 rating was not there yet)

Overall the ratings are quite comparable to the ones for film (even though the G rating is more or less unused outside of a few movies).
