Sounds like you've got a bright future as a prosecutor.

Transactional attorneys are a thing in the private sector, and legal work outside of the litigation departments in government is also available. There's a number of areas where you'd be unlikely to end up in a courtroom as a litigator.

Yeah, I thought as much. Something is still stopping me from committing to it entirely though...

Would you know attorneys or people who know attorneys you could reach out to? I wouldn't advise to take the plunge blind.

Unfortunately I'm not in much of a position to offer insight, since the firm I clerked for was a litigation firm and I'm currently a judicial clerk for an appellate judge, so I don't have experience practicing that I could offer you on that front. I have a bit of court experience, but I didn't like it (similar to you, I imagine).

Yeah, last time I went to grad school it was a mistake. What exactly should I ask the lawyers about?

So it would depend on the kind of lawyer a little bit. My first question was always what an average day for them would look like. If it was a litigator, I'd probe what courtroom experience is like. For transactional attorneys, I'd ask about their clients, what they do for them and how they interact. Ask also about what it's like in a firm environment, especially if they came in at entry level and worked their way up the advancement totem pole.

Edit: Also poke around about their legal education. See what classes they took and what they would recommend for their field.

Edit 2: also ask if any particular experiences stick out, like a case or a particular client, and poke their brain a bit with "what was that like?" or "how did you do x?"

Alright, I'll keep that in mind.

But I guess this job has a lot of moving parts >_>

I just want something straightforward

It does. Every client and every set of facts is different, so it takes effort and occasional ingenuity to keep things running smoothly.

There are areas such as estate planning that are fairly straightforward since most folks don't need a super complicated plan to sort their affairs. It's niche in that it's not a sexy or glamorous area of the law, but it is important. If I go into the private sector when my clerkship is over, I intend to make it a part of my practice, if not the focus.
