Me and a buddy of mine have been doing a weekly podcast for a few months now, and while we're mostly just doing it for fun, we typicaly cap out around 50-60 views per episode at the most and we seem to have hit a a bit of a ceiling with our view counts.

It's not a podcast about one specific subject which I think does make it a bit harder to advertise, but we do have a specific format we follow, and have gotten pretty good feedback on it overall, we're basically just at the point of getting our stuff out there more.

Anyone here with some podcasting experience who has gone through the early phases of getting your content out there?

We're pretty happy with our podcast overall and have gotten pretty consistent views, I think at a certain point you just start itching to see a jump in views.

I think haveing a specific topic like yours is in your favor, cause I feel like that makes it easier to reel people into watching it if that's something they're interested in, but neither me or my co-host wanted to talk about the same thing everything week so we decided to do a random-topic sorta format.

I'd like to give you advice but it looks like you're getting more listens than I am on my podcast.

We maintain an instagram and a YouTube page in an attempt to draw new listeners in.

I've heard that cross promoting with other content creators is great for extra exposure.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

Honestly we've mostly been focusing on Youtube/posting all the episodes on there, in part because we eventually want to expand into making actual Youtube videos and a wider variety of content soon, the podcast is just the easiest thing for us to make right now since we currently don't live in the same city.

We also have been uploading on Anchor so we're on Spotify and all that, but the vast majority of our listeners are currently on Youtube as that's where our focus has been.

No Instagram currently, but we do have a Twitter, so we're slowly trying to build our social media presence.

I think we have to keep reminding ourselves that growth for this kind of thing is slow, and we actually are seeing pretty steady growth, it's just hard not to itch for a big jump in views/listens.

Nah, it's a podcast where 2 generic white dudes talk about 3 random, unrelated subjects each week and "review" them while talking shit about each other.

It's great fun!

i was doing research for a prospective history podcast years back but i was overwhelmed by the amount of notes i was taking, couldn't keep it all organized

plus my first topic (biafran war) made the girl i was seeing uncomfortable (though i'd been doing research well before i met her) since her family lived through it

with that said, promotion has never been my forte; a lot of people seem to gain traction with viewership by posting their podcasts on reddit, you could try to play the SEO game on youtube, and some podcasters form podcast collectives to maximize surface area for lack of better words

That's honestly another reason we went for a more casual, "talk about what we want to talk about " format. Like, we do our random pick for what we'll talk about in the next episode each week, so we'll take that week to get familiar with our subjects and all that, but we don't let ourselves spend more than that week on any one subject to keep from getting super bogged down.

I've been trying to avoid the Reddit route simply because I don't really use Reddit much, but I might need to look into that more.

Eh fuck it, may as well go ahead and do a #ShamelessPlug and post it here.

Here's the link to our most recent episode on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/rOPHZO2OlkQ

And here's our Show Page on Spotify:
https://open.spotify.com/show/1OKmPHazFyOK9yQ3Rvpef0?si=7Ib9NqFETIuuxIjkSBb0qw

There's no real continuity between episodes outside of a couple dumb running jokes, so pick whatever main subject for an ep sounds cool to you. I think the first 12 or so episodes we had worse mics so be aware of that, but otherwise we've kept it pretty consistent with only a few very minor changes in format.

You should do it; Obviously I'd like more listeners in the long run, but honestly just podcasting itself is super duper fun, especially if you have a good co-host who you enjoy recording with.

I've enjoyed your takes on 90s music, and you seem like a pretty good dude, so I'll give it a listen at work later.

From what you've described, it sounds like, CE: The Podcast, which I'll probably enjoy, but might be tough to market.

Thanks dude <3

Yeah, the casual nature I think is both the selling point and also what makes it hard to advertise.

Yeah, I think that's the main thing is keeping persistent with it. We've only been doing this since April so it's still pretty new.

Definitely guests. From more established productions, or even anyone with a decent follower count that can be relevant to the topic.

Makes sense; we haven't had any guests yet, but I think it wouldn't be too terribly difficult to naturally fit guests into our current format.

I would definitely become a casual youtuber before ever going the podcast route.

I find it almost impossibly difficult to actually be able to carve out a niche in the podcast world. Yes, it does happen - especially with particularly niche subjects - but it's a rare feat. And if that's not your goal, I'd have to think you're just devoting a ton of free time to a task that doesn't give you that much of a corresponding sense of reward.
