We're still dealing with the consequences of the insanity caused by his win in 2008. The Republican Party and American "conservatism" was already rotten at its core, but that was when they lost their minds.

Nope.

Trump was inevitable. He is the logical conclusion of what the Republicans have been running on. Being able to co-opt the birther bullshit to make him Obama's archnemesis in the eyes of the right was a useful stepping stone in his rise to power, but he could have found another way.

in 2008 when he won, I was at the time living in a low income housing apartment building exclusively for people on disability but many of my neighbors were boomers. I was the youngest person in the building I am pretty sure when I first moved in. I was there for like 9 years and only a handful of fellow millennials moved in after me in that time. anyway....on like the day after the 2008 election I overheard people talking about how Obama was going to put all the white people in internment camps. that was the kindof fear flying around at the time. and this wasn't even in a red state. this was in WA state, near Seattle. a heavy democrat state for longer than I have been alive. in fact I dont think they have ever voted republican in their entire history.

Hes wrong. We had a 2nd term of Barry O., and people simply aren't as racist as the internet would have you believe.

The real issue, as far as I've seen, was the height of REEEEE culture in 2016. Turned off people all across the political spectrum. Trump was the conservative brakes kicking in a little too hard. I think damn near any Republican would've won 2016.

So was it obama who caused a racial divide or Trump. Cant have it both ways. Though obama didn't do anything himself other than be black. But i do feel that caused racists to start being more transparent where as before a lot of them at least knew to keep their opinions private.

Also I dont feel its that simple. This country is divided just enough that usually after 8 years of one party running the show the other side picks up a good chunk of people who could go either way. Grass is greener on the other side mentality types.

You realize that a mere 77 thousand votes across Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin was what flipped things in favor of Trump, right? All states that voted for Obama twice. But all those blue collar workers that voted for Obama just decided to become racist after a couple years. Makes sense.

People move, people stay home for unpopular candidates, Hillary ran an awful campaign, and voting for Obama doesn't mean you're not "racially anxious."
Obama pushed change, he won. Trump pushed change, he won. Whether that change is closing Guantanamo Bay or closing the borders, they still promised something more.

Voting for a black man absolutely does not mean you're not racist. The fact that we could elect one overwhelmingly twice and then have the most people ever vote for Donald Trump after 4 years of racism shows that.

Voting for someone you consider exceptional or who you believe will give you something says nothing about your baseline racial views.

Well, he's right. Nearly every time there is progress or a barrier broken by minorities in government (whether through laws, elected officials, etc), especially black people, there is a push back by the white majority. History has repeatedly shown this.
