The good:

The combat, while not as refined as DMC 4 and 5, is more varied in that you can chain multiple different weapons into a single combo. Makes for interesting combos, though it can get a bit too convoluted when you really try to make this work creatively.

The music is great

Surprisingly good visual design - the words that fade in and out of things is really clever. I don't like the character designs, though.

The Bad:

The humor, though self-aware, is still a bit too late 90's edgy for its own good
The story is bad, and Dante himself is annoying
Weapon selection is not great

and even though it's a (correct) example of bad dialogue, I love Dante's interaction with the Succubus Demon.

I laugh every time.

I think that the only significant part of the game that I don't like is what they did with Vergil's character.

dude's always been an edgelord in whatever game he showed up in, but he never seemed like the type to shoot a pregnant woman in her stomach, regardless of whether she was a demon or not

DMC 5 slayed DmC in every aspect.
It's at the very least equal to DMC3, better in my opinion.

It was a mediocre action game and bad Devil May Cry game at launch.

The DE made it into a pretty decent action game, but still a bad Devil May Cry game.

This is a thing in DMC4/5 as well though. Especially with Dante.

For me, it was their entire attitude before the game came out. All they had to do was say something like "we understand that fans of the series adore Dante as he was in the other games. We are very excited however to introduce fans to our version of Dante and show what makes him similar, but different".

Instead what we got was "We don't care what the fans think" "Old Dante is gay" "You guys are idiots"
The DMC fans decided (justifiably) that they hated the game before it came out because of that.
