I would initially think it would be weight distribution, due to the sounds on landing from a jump, but X is 5'3" and weighs about 125lbs.

Probably a propulsion system for jumps/dashes that requires a larger surface area.

Then again, the official specs do include a gyroscopic stabilization system for balance. Just looking for an in-universe justification.
