Somehow, a mouse got into my house. I'm not overly sure how, that's something I'll have to look into later. Well, after the initial shock of it all, I at least had two cats on the case. I was hoping to just chase the mouse out and have that be that, but it didn't quite work out that way.

They cornered and trapped the mouse behind or under a bookcase, and it was there for quite a while. I really didn't want to just leave it there to roam freely, so I tried to move the bookcase a bit so the cats could resume chasing it.

Turns out, I'm a fucking idiot, and the mouse was crushed in the process. Its eyeball popped out and it died at some point during this.

I've never, ever killed anything bigger than a dangerous-looking spider in my life, and never that graphically. I just broke down and cried over the thing.

I feel like an absolute asshole over this whole incident. I just wanted the mouse to leave, or if it had to die, I'd rather the cats did it in a more natural death than...that. Just a really, really, really awful experience all around.

If you crushed it, it was likely an instant death. If the cats got it, they would have played with it, while it suffered, for at least 20 minutes. This is fact. My cats get field mice frequently, and it's a toy until it stops breathing. It realized a better fate by what you did. Maybe that will bring you a mild amount of relief.

If you think that's bad, you should see animals get them.

One got in my house a while back and my 120lb Akita pawed it by the tail and then just fucking grabbed it and yeeted it across the room like a toy into the wall. Poor thing squeaked for like 10 seconds before dying.

Crushing is pretty merciful.

Yeah that was a quick death compared to letting your cats do it.

The cats would've made it suffer more. You don't get to absolve responsiblity for your cats doing the jobs for you, anyway.

Hopefully you guys are right and it was merciful. I still feel really awful about it. I wish I could have just shooed it out peacefully instead of...all of that.
