That would be a relatively small Supreme Court for 2 to 4 years.

No, if they retire like immediately Trump can nominate replacements and the Senate can confirm them prior to their term expiring January 3.

I think people really overestimate how bipartisan supreme court judges actually are. I can't see any of them just retiring to slam through appointing a younger judge.

I think people really overestimate how bipartisan supreme court judges actually are. I can't see any of them just retiring to slam through appointing a younger judge.I used to agree whole heartedly, but I think really it comes down to the individual desires of each justice. The supreme court has/had been held together by a few justices that valued legitimacy and reputation of the court above all else. I don't think the court is partisan in general, but they do have ideological leanings. RBG wanted to have her replacement picked by hillary for a reason. And it's impossible to call Kavanaugh non-partisan. Justice Thomas is super right wing, etc etc --- You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. If this topic had been about setting term limits for SC justices, I would have said yes. Let them have a term of 14 years, and replace one every 2. That length can be stayed if someone steps down or dies in office. But it should not be a lifelong position.

No need to stay for people replaced mid-term imo. Just allow them to be renominated when the term ends. I dont mind people being eligible for more than 18 years if chosen to have their seat back.
Also the terms should expire on the 1st and 3rd years of a presidential term. That way they arent on election years so you avoid that mess. --- "Hope is allowed to be stupid, unwise, and naive." ~Sir Chris ... Copied to Clipboard!
