In day to day conversations, I hear people on the left and people on the right make the same claims about the opposing side. They bemoan a lack of open-mindedness, of objectivity, of a consideration of facts and the value of listening to the other side. Yet they almost inevitably fail to embody these principles themselves.

The important thing is that you've figured out a way to be superior to both.

This is part of the problem, the mindset that any particular group is "superior" to another. An earnest desire to understand viewpoints not entirely aligning with your own is what's needed to bridge the gap between different groups.

The problem is that many viewpoints should not have bridges.
Why should someone who believes abortion is murder be ok with it being legal? Why should someone who views healthcare as a right be ok with people going bankrupt over easily preventable diseases? Why should someone who believes immigrants need to follow through the process and not jump the wall be ok with the Dreamers? Why should someone who believes the rich need to be taxed more be ok with more taxcuts that never trickle down to the needy?
Where do they bridge the gap on their morals and life experiences that are incompatible with the opposite?

It's not necessarily about accepting such values when they oppose your own view, it's about at least trying to understand why the opposing side agrees with such a thing. The lack of trying in this regard, by both sides, is what concerns me.

Not really. Chances are the guy who posted that is a Democrat who would gladly jump on board if I was shitting on Republicans, but because I'm also including Democrats in my objective evaluation he's butt-hurt so I must be a holier-than-out dick-hole.

I cannot actually imagine a consistent and semi-coherent belief system that could straddle "both sides" perfectly. What and where the sides are doesn't seem to be clear anyway and changes with the wind.

That's because both parties are becoming more and more extreme as times goes on. Hopefully this will result in a viable third party emerging at some point.

Lol, I'm just describing my affiliation. If I gave off a haughty vibe, it certainly wasn't my intention. I'm no better than anybody else. But it's important to recognize frailties. I have them too.

Really, if you ever come to a conclusion, you are picking a side. The galaxy brains are just convinced there are exactly 3 sides: Republican, Democrat, and theirs.

I am pretty far left but I was raised in the rural south as a Southern Baptist. I am perfectly capable of seeing "both sides". Being able to see something from someone else's perspective doesn't mean you have to take some wishy-washy stance. The middle is not a position. True moderates are moderate because they have some views on the right and others on the left. Not because they are in the middle on everything.

Do you tend to notice that it's only the left who hates centrists?

There's a lot of people that just can't fathom thinking like other people and have their heads so far up their own asses, its not that they can't understand the opposing side, they refuse to.

The reason both exist is supposed to be about opposing values that can come to a head and discuss a compromise that benefits both sides instead of only trying to shut down the other side and give nothing.
