Only if you can verify the fee goes directly the driver in full.

I don't tip delivery service drivers because they aren't acting outside of their role. When you have someone from the restaurant themselves deliver food to you, it's like they're doing you an additional service beyond their duties at the restaurant so they deserve a little extra for the convenience.

But people who just pick up the food from a restaurant to bring it to you are being compensated by the service who sent them out so it's their entire job to bring you food. Plus I had heard about the service providers withholding part of the driver's base fee if they got tipped, meaning the recipient would have to tip double the delivery fee in order for the driver to get both the base fee and your tip. I'd rather make the service pay for their delivery in full than to have them shave off part of that fee just because I tipped the driver.

Solution: Always get pick up

There are other fees when you get delivery besides just the delivery fee and the tip

I had this debate with one of my friends who's worked in several restaurants. He tips for pickup because he sees the line from start to finish and believes that the chain is still worth giving a tip to even if the last step is the customer coming to get the food themselves.

I'm a little skeptical of this myself but I do take his words with some gravity since he's been there.

I feel like you should tip food service for pickup if any of these apply

1. You are wealthy.
2. You make things notably more complicated then they need to be.
3. You come close to close
4. Your order is very large. Extra modifier if it's a very large order during prime lunch or dinner houra.
5. You do curbside when it's raining hard, hailing, extremely hot, thunderstorming, icy or very cold.
6. Are rude or chat excessively
7. You have the flu or something similar when picking up(don't do this but if you do tip like 50%+ or more you fucking asshole.)

Basically tip if you are making me miserable and/or wasting the time of every single worker and customer by gumming shit up with bullshit.

And if you are wealthy be nice and share just a little droplet of that wealth to us plebeians

If you refuse to spot your delivery driver a bit of gas money, then I hope you don't hit up your buddy for a ride because you likely don't give him any money to help him cover gas and maintenance for his car either.

Something else is that services like Grubhub are always more expensive than just ordering from the restaurant normally.

That is how they make their money back.

These types of people usually tend to charge their friends gas money. It all just comes down to being stingy.

It doesnt. It helps to pay for the insurance to have people driving.

Your friend is wrong. You can tip, but it's not something that's expected unless you picking up a giant catering order.

Tipping is the worst and should never be standard practice. Employees shoudl be paid by their employers.
