A liger is much larger than its parents.

A male lion has a growth promoting gene
A lioness has a growth limiting gene

Male lion x female lion = normal lion

A male tiger has a growth limiting gene
A tigress has a growth promoting gene

Male tiger x female tiger = normal tiger

Male lion x tigress = two growth promoting genes = huge liger
Male tiger x female lion = two growth limiting genes = small tigon
