Like Kreator, Trivium, Machine Head thrash type stuff. That's my favorite singing style, but the really guttural growls from Cannibal Corpse or something just sound bad to me.

There's good gutterals and bad ones.
The good ones typically fall into the realm where either the voice is just another element of the percussion that adds to the overall body of the music. The other is where the voice is actually discernible and just fits the tone of the actual music. It's hard to imagine anything but gutterals for music like Amon Amarth's and Entombed's for instance. I was going to list a few groups as bad examples, but I pulled up their music since I haven't heard it in forever and I actually find it tolerable lol Which is odd, because I haven't really listened to metal, extreme or not, in ages. --- Hail Hydra ... I don't really listen to death metal, I like power and thrash more. Arch Enemy's cool, but the vocals are the same kind of higher scream that I like. Yeah gutturals fit Amon Amarth's style more than high screams or clean vocals, but for example I like Sabaton's cover of Twilight of the Thunder God more than the original.

I like all of it, but I tend to favor higher pitched screams over guttural growls. I tend to lean towards black, sludge, stoner, and doom as my favorite subgenres of metal.

All vocal styles can be good imo but I do find growling to be the most hit or miss

Thats what you consider a higher metal scream? I figured you meant like king diamond or something.
I do enjoy king diamond and all, but I also enjoy low growls. I prefer my metal either absurdly goofy or absurdly heavy --- I think there might be something wrong with you ... Copied to Clipboard!

I would also consider Trivium and Machine Head to be on the lower end. High pitched screams more like Vektor, Skeletonwitch, late-era Death, etc. more of a black metal inspired performance.
Listen to Blood Incantation, they are a success of low growls. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I think by higher I meant "not guttural." --- show my boi Daruk some love d00ds ... Copied to Clipboard!
