If you look at it from a Christian's perspective, details of monetary policy just aren't that important. If the government isn't providing for the poor and left behind, in theory that's the role of the church. In some ways it is better that way because it offers opportunities to evangelize the downtrodden. In many ways they are specifically told not to worry too much on the specifics of governance, and simply to be obedient, law abiding citizens.

So it makes sense that moral issues are the only ones that really matter to evangelicals, and the issue of poverty is best solved by spreading the religion. If you spread your religion about caring for the poor, you will do so and save their eternal soul.

I'm not religious, but I've been going to church all my life. People say it's hypocritical to stop abortion but to not help the needy through government intervention, but from a Christian worldview it is consistent with their moral framework to care about abortion but not care about what the government is or isn't doing to help the needy. Because people of "true faith" will be called for that purpose, and saving souls while they're at it.

people for whom its a big issue literally think that people who have abortions are murdering babies

now we can debate the hypocrisy of them not supporting public welfare and sexual health awareness etc, but if you thought something was murdering babies wouldnt you want it to stop?

how do you convince those people otherwise?

I dont get it from a Christian perspective. Abortions happened during biblical times. They knew certain plants would induce a miscarriage.

In Numbers, the trial of the bitter waters seems to put a rather pro-abortion (not pro-choice, the husband decides if she takes the trial).

And in Exodus, during the whole eye for an eye time, if 2 men fighting cause a miscarriage, it isnt treated like a loss of life. The guy responsible is subject to a find, not the death of his own child.

I dont think early Christians treated it any differently than adultery or prostitution, and persisted like that for centuries.
