It was a wholly separate screen that could be used for a variety of things, like providing notification updates, sport scores, news headlines, etc. The "Edge" on all the new phones is purely aesthetic and does nothing. The Edge display and the ability to triple tap the home button shrinking the entire display for a 1 handed mode was amazing. While I'm happy with my Pixel 4 XL, there are still features I miss.
