got a phone call from an 800 number that my phone automatically displayed as "Southern California Edison" claiming that my house's power was about to be shut off because of an unpaid balance, and it told me to call an 844 number for the "billing department" to confirm

i don't know why but i called the number and the automated system resembled SCE's regular bill payment one, but was bugged because it said it was going to transfer me to a rep but asked me for a phone input. got connected to some indian sounding dude, which is when i said you know what let me call you back

and then i did what i should have done at the start and looked up SCE's actual billing department number and called and confirmed my payment was received and that i'm slightly stupid

tl'dr come take all my money from me it's apparently pretty easy

SEP stands for Southerncalifornia Edison Paymentdepartment and I just looked up your account again and actually you've missed a lot of payments so I need you to make them to me so I can credit them to your account but also just do it and don't call us or anything because honestly that's pretty annoying

Not at all. There are a lot of scam call centers based in that region, so it's reasonable that it might raise a red flag.

I got a phone call like that, except the twist is that when I checked online it turned out I hadn't paid the power bill in eight months. Whoops.

I have clients all over the country and now because of covid they all call my cell phone from all sorts of numbers (personal, home, office, etc) so I can't not pick up my phone. :(

There are a lot of customer service call centers there too. I'm not sure I'd be suspicious for that specific reason, but if it got you out of a scam it's good.

I got a year of like 10 different subscriptions and I literally never read a single one.

there's been a hell of a lot of phone scams here in ontario claiming to be the canadian department of justice saying you're in trouble and they're coming to arrest you

even got some that spoof the actual department of justice phone #, so if you simply look up the number online it'll still look legit because it matches

it was really annoying over the summer I kept getting them numerous times a day
