Technically voter suppression can exist without it being anyone's fault. But she's diluting the term by using it in that way.
Really? You think 4 hour waiting lines won't discourage anyone from voting? People here are too used to having a broken "democracy".

So they can indeed still vote. They also have the ability to vote by mail and completely bypass any form of line, which if you care about the pandemic is the best way to vote.

Im not saying it doesnt suck, but long lines is a dumb thing to bitch about when it #1 doesnt stop anyone from voting, and #2 isnt the only way to vote. Its a inconvenience if youre dead set on voting in person

There are a handful of reasons why some people cannot vote by mail. And if you're currently working taking 4-8 hours out of your work day to vote usually isn't possible. Most workplaces give up to 2 hours if that. So long lines definitely do stop people from voting.

There was a time lapse the other day of this dude in some southern state that waited 13 hours to vote. that's outrageous. Dunno why I said country lol

But that's not something you call "voter suppression" because you're implying it's the same thing that Texas did when they wanted one voting place per district or whatever.

They're not providing adequate polling places. As mentioned by someone else in this topic already, the pandemic is not an excuse when fewer polling places mean more people getting together in fewer places.

If material circumstances are making it harder for citizens to vote, it's voter suppression. Seems like a fucking great thing to worry about for an elected representative

Inefficient government is not a new thing. They were probably focusing on other stuff (such as the pandemic...) and no one demanded that they add more polling places so nothing was done about it.

How loud was the demand for more polling places in NYC before this article?

Inefficient government is by design. You're falling into the propaganda of "inefficient government, efficient private entierprise!!" but it's bullshit propaganda pushed by the likes of Reagan and other jackasses who pushed the idea and then implemented it as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Government, like any organization, can be efficient. No organization can be efficient if it's designed to be inefficient from the onset.

There was always a demand for more polling places everywhere, but those calls were focused on republicans because they're the ones usually found closing polling places. Now that democrats are doing the same thing it's suddenly okay? This was AOC's point and you missed it, as did a bunch of others in this topic.

They didn't miss it , they went out of their way to avoid it. This is what happen in KY that stopped many black people from voting.

Increasing the cost of voting, purposefully or accidentally, suppresses votes and is therefore voter suppression. A conspiracy isn't necessary for it to qualify and it also isn't necessary for it to be a concern.

Each and every one of you should be applauding a representative of the people for sounding the alarm about barriers to citizen participation, not calling her stupid. But some have you have been so primed to hate her and call her stupid that you can't let an opportunity go by.

So are you saying this government is evil?

Again, this is something you try to fix rather than blame someone for. By calling it voter suppression, she is specifically blaming the government. As people have said it really makes no sense for the NYC government to suppress NYC voters when the government and the voters are mostly one party throughout the city.

Voter suppression can and has been unintentional in the past. That doesn't make it any less of an issue. Lack of voting sites have been an issue in almost every state this election and people have called for more to be open leading up to the election, including AOC.

America is such a joke. Wow. "Democracy" in action.

Every single time I've ever voted I literally walked in, showed ID, drew an 'X' and was out within 5 minutes. I don't live in a 3rd world country though.

As if somehow this is the Republicans secret plan to turn New York red.

Youre in the largest city in the world voting in person amid a pandemic.

What exactly are they doing, making everyone wait 10 minutes between voters?

Shell bitch about anything.

yup
