for a while, a lot of classrooms have shifted to having assignents on google docs/classrooms.

why not just post the material online, recordings, lessons, etc. and homework online and have them do it on their own time? if kids need help, yeah thats when you can do video calls.

is there a law saying that teachers and students need to have so many hours of face-to-face time, that they just didn't want to change?

the school district asked my office to set up basically childcare for students who can't be at home alone for their zoom lessons and im watching one lesson and its a fucking shit show. kids shouting over each other, messing around on the mic, turning off their mics and cameras and teachers spending a ton of time trying to reign them all in and teach their lessons.

why bother?

Last semester I had two classes structured this way. Recorded video lectures, zoom call for questions during the designated class time. It's pretty easy to get lazy and fall behind, but it's equally as easy to catch up when you're more motivated. I would say it worked pretty well, but it was a grad class so maybe that made a difference. However there is an issue in that it isn't clear to the professor when they move too fast or accidentally gloss over stuff until after the fact.

Pretty dumb topic dude. If kids need help then they can do face time. So a teacher is just supposed to bee ready to take multiple calls from multiple students who need help at random hours? Its a lot better to have a set time where the teacher can still teach (most students learn better that way) and questions can be answered in real time. Also, kids messing around is no different than a normal class.

what were you thinking with this one lol...

When they start paying teachers like they pay doctors, your argument may, MAY, have a little validity.

Yes, there are laws here in CA about the number of hours students are required to be "in school." Our Synchronous/Asynchronous instruction is built around that. Right now my students are in Breakout Rooms doing some group analysis.

It also works much better for some students to have a set time for each class.

im not trying to say i know more than school admin, im just staring at the horror that are these zoom classrooms and wondering why

i wish he didn't post that. some hospitals in the midwest are suffering massive amounts of corona patients in hospitals to the point of possibly choosing who lives or dies. it's not funny at all.

I actually agree with you. My 8-year-old is doing virtual school and the zoom classes are basically useless. He logs in, ignores the teacher for 20-30 minutes, then the class is over early (every class, every day) and I have to stop what I'm working on to come in there and A) re-explain the lesson to him, and B) figure out wtf he's supposed to be working on.

The other kids seem to be having the same issue. Some of them have incomplete assignments from 6 weeks ago because they don't know what to do. They broke out into private rooms yesterday and today to work on a project in 5-person groups. Every kid in his group spent the whole time asking each other what they're supposed to be doing.

And this is with a teacher who specializes in remote learning. I have to have my kid sitting in front of a computer at 8 every morning for this. I know I could do it better if they just gave me the damn syllabus and cut us loose.

yeah i see that. i have a kid in my group that i supervise that will open up his zoom lesson, pay attention for 10 minutes, then fall asleep. every day. i have to wake him up. what a waste of time.

why force these kids to wake up at 7am to listen to a screaming terrified woman for an hour. why not just say look your kid has these due by the end of the week, get em done see ya.

and YES I KNOW some kids need structure. wouldn't it make sense to take those kids and have specialized zoom classes just for them?

Teachers have office hours, and it's not really a problem to email them to schedule a zoom meeting. I would not expect them to take random facetime calls all day. Also, I'd say roughly 90% of the questions my son's classmates are asking during class are variations of "what are we supposed to be doing"

It's a constant struggle. Every class, the teacher is constantly telling kids "stop doing that!" "Turn on your camera!" "Mute your mic!" over and over and over, and the big difference between this and face-to-face is he can't actually make them stop acting up, and the kids all know this. They were dunking on him constantly at the beginning of the year until he just straight up turned off the chat.

In college because of the rampant cheating that took place the previous semester. It depends on schools but in my area. Some make it so you have to have the camera on you and your surroundings to make sure you dont google answers or have someone in same room helping during tests.

who said they're not teaching? if they do what i said, they're still making lessons, worksheets, designing projects, etc. it just doesn't materialize out of thin air.

jeez. yeah i over heard the teacher say if you wont turn on your camera, they're just going to kick you out of class. what a waste of time
