What state? That legitimately makes a difference. I live in TN, I lived in metro Atlanta, GA for years, i've also lived in Oklahoma and Missouri on military posts, but i'm pretty familiar with a lot of regions of these 4 states. I also have worked in and frequent Alabama.

Humid hot
Both good points. In TN we have a couple weeks of 100+ temperatures. Near Atlanta, i've experienced 112 at the peak of August. You don't understand heat until you are in that and it's humid. You walk three steps and your whole body is instantly damp.

If you can tolerate the people, there is legitimately a lot of property on a lot of land in the TN mountains that can be had for super cheap. I bought my house that was foreclosed on 10 acres of land, for under $30,000. It's market value now is about $125k. A normal mortgage in this area for a place like this is around $500 a month.

Be prepared to have your car rear ended a lot. I lived in Florida for 2 years and was rear ended 4 times and all 4 times I was stopped at a red light. The third one gave me herniated discs in my neck and back. I decided to move back to NY after.

Well, I lived in NY my whole life and I didn't want to move to Florida in the first place. I hate everything about Florida. The heat, the people, the amount you have to drive to go to the store, my crazy ex who tried to get me fired from work, etc. NY is also top 5 safest driving states in the country according to this thing on the news a few days ago.

This is the thing too. Massachusetts has changed or it's just old money where I live now, but I grew up in western ma which was pretty reasonable price and everything and the people were nice. Never had any issues growing up really. I've had great friends here. Obviously jerks everywhere but other than that. I live in the worcester area now and it feels like i'm in another world. People are stiff around here. It is more red too as far as voting. It's also more expensive just because it's closer to boston.

I've literally spent the last 10 hears of my life stuck in Worcester because it's a pit. Surrounding areas homes are like half a million dollars to live in some rural crap town with crappy people. I moved out here because it's where jobs were for me since I work in tech. I've wasted 10 years though because this place is such a pit.

A lot of the South is red, that's pretty obvious, but in my experience not a whole lot really try to shove it down your throat. My neighbors are all for Trump, they know i'm Democrat, and it hasn't changed anything. My closest neighbor brings me venison sausage every year for Christmas, along with a pecan pie. I get random bags of produce on my porch chair, half the time I don't even know who it comes from. It's a very different life, but the cost of living is low, the property taxes are laughable. If you ever make it a serious consideration, you can pick my brain. I've moved a lot, owned property and TN and GA especially i'm very familiar with the good and the not so good areas to go and live.

I notice it but the nicer it gets the cost of living just goes up that much higher. It's weird. They are tr ying to gentrify and everything. I don't like this area that much.

1) "Southern Hospitality" is not real. There are nice people in the South, just like anywhere else, but prepare to encounter more belligerent assholes than you would in the Midwest or Rockies.

2) While Southern Hospitality is not real, the reputation of Southern Fixins is absolutely justified. Generally speaking: the older the clientele, the better the food.

3) Southerners lean hard on the following spots for vacations: Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Myrtle Beach, Orlando and Destin. If you visit one of these yourself, it will prove to be a hell of an icebreaker.

4) Take the Atlanta Bypass when driving through Georgia. You do not want to get caught in Atlanta traffic. (Fun city, though!)

5) Exhaust all other options before moving to Kentucky. And if you must move to Kentucky, exhaust all other options before moving to Louisville.

YES!!! I love West Virginia, on God. Even just driving through it is awe-inspiring thanks to the scenery.

Morgantown is a great place, and while Huntington isn't exactly "nice and clean" on the whole, its downtown area is really fun and has a killer food scene.

Just to be clear, you think every person who lives in the south feels this way?

Well, then I guess you also assume that every person on the west coast is extremely liberal, covered in smog, always fighting off earthquakes, and jerking off about how "woke" they are.

See, I would never say that, because it's absurd, but you did just say that.

No its not. This is the kind of thing somebody says after watching cartoons depicting Southern people. I mean, what does this even mean? Ive lived in New York, Baltimore, Raleigh, Asheville, and Charleston. The pace is exactly the same.

Honestly, this is like going to Mexico and then being surprised everyone isnt wearing a sombrero and taking a siesta like that looney tunes mouse.

Thats just good advice for life. Although restaurants have ruined sweet tea by dumping a shit load of sugar in it, and now thats what everyone expects. Im looking at you Bojangles. My Grandmother used one cup per two gallon pitcher. But its actually better with like half a cup per pitcher.

I'm thinking of moving either to:

Atlanta, GA
Little rock, AR
Memphis, TN

Main reason I'm moving is to get away from high cost of living areas and high tax rates. I can easily buy a home and pay it in full. Also I'm sort of used to the hot weather (around 90F) as I work outdoors all day. Not sure if CA hot weather is any different from the south. I'll be visiting the mentioned cities soon and touring them.

Also I'm not white and would prefer to live in known cities that are more diverse and less racial than places outside of the cities and into the rural farm or marsh areas in southern states.

You know Little Rock and Memphis are among the most dangerous cities in the US, right? I think they are both in the top 10. Atlanta isn't exactly a gem either, but i'd pick it of those 3.

ewww those are all terrible options. Honestly I am not a huge fan of Atlanta because it has nothing to offer to counter the negatives. Race wise, there are enclaves for successful minorities, but as soon as you hit those white parts of Buckhead, cobb county, Forsyth, and outside Atlanta in general, it is racist af. However, Atlanta has the best opportunity by far out of the three options.

Little Rock) Never been, sounds **** and never plan to go there

Memphis) Memphis is a dying city losing it's talent to Nashville. You now how the rust belt is for cities like Detroit? The Mississippi river cities are the rust belt of the south. Memphis is a depressing ghetto **** hole city lol.
