In UK some "Traveller" families purchased land and live on it. Now they interfere with the view and are being forced to leave on the grounds that they did not get the property zoned for residence.

While England may enforce building codes more strictly than Chicago, IL, USA, I opine that what they notice and do not notice is political rather than ethical.

It said they didn't get planning permission to use the land as a place to live and it's at risk of flooding so it's unsuitable for family life.

I say to Charlotte there are some people who are bound to say, "Well you didn't get planning permission first."
Most people can't just put an extension on their home or build a new house on land without getting approval - so why should it be different for them?

"My answer to them is try living at the side of the road," she says. "To have no home, it leaves you with no choice. It's very easy for people to say when they're living comfortably.

"I can see what they're saying, but we have a reason behind it. We're asking to be able to be part of the community at no expense to the council."

"I chose not to have a home" isn't exactly a good excuse for why she should get a special exception. She could also choose a plot of land that's zoned for housing, rather than buying some random plot and then arguing she'd be homeless otherwise.

They will not be home at those times that the land is at risk for flooding making this a lame excuse. (As if zoning keeps Brits from getting their basements flooded).

It doesn't matter. They intentionally bought a plot of land that was not zoned for housing, parked their campers there, and are now asking for special exceptions for no good reason. If they wanted somewhere to park their camper, they could have bought land that was zoned for housing. They haven't actually given a valid reason for why they should be given special treatment.

I love how you keep posting your opinion as being irrefutable. The only reliable part of your post is "It doesn't matter." I agree. None of the facts matter when all you want to do is evict people.

My bet is that some developer has plans for the land and needs these Travellers evicted. All flooding problems and obstruction of view problems will not be an issue for developer's plan. There is something similar near me in Chicago. There is a humongous development in the works on a wetlands. It is taking years to make all of the deals. They want the city to put in the water, sewage, fuel lines and want some mass transit stations to be built inside the gates.

Not all laws work for everyone but they aren't going to go breaking them, then complain about it. There are proper ways of doing things.
If she couldn't be bothered to find out how to go about living there lawfully, that's her fault. There are plenty of ways to get help with that sort of thing.
Also, if that place floods all the time, no insurance company is going to give her a policy.

Zoning laws are super fucked up. Not inherently, but in practice they're mostly designed and used unethically by local politicians to mistreat people and make a lot of personal money.

Yeah, just read the full article.

Obviously, there's legal grounds to evict them. But it's unethical, they're not being denied planning permissions for legitimate reasons, they're being denied because the city council is racist and trying to force them elsewhere. It's super fucked up.
