I literally said I would rather be hated by both sides. If I cared about feelings, wouldn't I just choose one or the other so I could at least get some positive feelings?

I am opting for hate from both sides. It doesn't make sense, you would think they rather I not vote then vote for their enemy. But no, because I am not helping them, they hate me. So if there's nothing I can do about it, I will take that from both sides.

I don't see Trump or Biden supporters saying they support fascists. Now you could search up, and find the most extreme example of some right wing asshole saying they want to kill liberals. But then a right winger will show up in the topic and find the most extreme example of a left wing asshole saying the want to kill conservatives.

Are either of those people right, just because they both found one example of that extremism (and there are those examples on both sides)? They might be, they might not be, but I don't want to associate with either of them.

See, this is what I have realized about this issue.

I used to be one of those people who said something along the lines of "well, if the left is mean to me then I'll just move to the right". This all starts with left wingers being the only ones who care about the "enlightened centrist" and "centrists are really right wingers" thing.

But then I realized that was being stupid. Ideally you should always vote based on your beliefs, not based on what random people have said and done. Unfortunately with the first past the post voting system, you also have to consider whether you're wasting your vote by voting for a third party candidate who has no chance of winning and may hurt the Dem/Rep candidate you agree with more.

But that being said, nothing is more of a waste than not voting at all. Individually it may not be big deal that you're not voting, but when you add everyone who thinks like you do suddenly only a slight majority of eligible voters are voting for the presidential election (which is the most popular election). At that point the group of non-voters becomes important in all elections, in a bad way.

Thank you for this reasonable reply. But I don't agree. Not voting is a right. If we had to vote, it wouldn't be a choice, and thus wouldn't be a right. It would be something we'd be forced to do. That isn't how it works luckily. Voting is a right that we can choose. Having a firearm is a right. Not all choose to take advantage of that, I don't blame them.

If I don't agree with system entirely, nor any of the candidates in it, what should I do?

Who's fault is that, me who doesn't participate, or the people who voted them in? Or is it like, 80% them and 20% me? How does it break down? How much blame should I be receiving for this position?

And I should say also, a few in the topic have made fun of me calling me a centrist. I'm not, as I don't consider myself in any kind of "reasonable middle" between the two sides. Or I should say, I don't believe being equally in the middle of them is reasonable. If there's a political spectrum, I'm off kilter somewhere else on it.

The bolded is your answer. Who do you agree with more? Specifically, do you agree with Biden or Trump more? That is who you should vote for. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with the person entirely. Voting is anonymous for a reason. Your soul is not marked after you vote and no one can do anything to you for voting.

Keep in mind also that when you voting for the President, you aren't just voting for Joe Biden or Donald Trump. You are basically voting for a Democratic Executive Branch vs. a Republican Executive Branch. Who would you rather have as the face of the country (and as the one guiding the direction of the country, frankly)?

There's a lot of options. Voting Trump and talking about it, voting Biden and talking about it. Voting one of them, and not talking about it, what you suggest. Not voting, and not talking about it. Or, not voting, and talking about it. I've chosen the latter. I don't see myself any worse than anyone else on this board posting political topics, as they have all chosen one of these options.

Well I doubt there is ever going to be a law requiring everyone to vote in America.

Of course you have the right not to vote, but what is the benefit of that? If everyone voted, the direction of the country would be more in line with how everyone (as a whole) wants it to go. Now maybe half of eligible voters are deciding the direction of the US, how can that be a good thing? Take it to the extremes, what if everyone voted vs. what if only one person voted. It's pretty obvious which scenario would be better.

Biden would be the perfect candidate if he wasn't so bent on pushing ineffective, sweeping gun control.

Believe it or not there's a sizable number of pro-gun Democrats that don't like the idea of surrendering their firearms, or making it so difficult for a citizen to arm themselves. Especially when suicides by firearm make up almost two-thirds of all gun deaths in the US.

Hell, just look at this current presidency. People are talking about literal fascism in the party, then without a shred of self awareness want to vote in someone looking for actual disarmament.

If I was scared, I'd choose one of the sides, as at least I'd have a safe home base where I could try to avoid the other side. Or I'd try to vote 3rd party, hoping that would appease both sides (it won't, but someone scared would do that)

With what I'm choosing, I will not be on either side's good graces. Therefore potentially causing more backlash, but it makes me more comfortable with myself, that I didn't choose left or right out of fear.

Thankfully there's the 2nd Amendment and a whole bunch of Republicans (and probably conservative Democrats as well) that won't let actual forced disarmament get anywhere.

I don't think it makes sense to not vote for Biden because of this one issue when you agree with him on many other issues, especially if you think he would be the perfect candidate besides this one issue.
