Half of museums probably joining those restaurants...

Curious if there are any New Yorkers up in here: What the hell are you doing for work? And if its now a job you can do remotely, why are you still in NYC? The main reason to be there is probably gone until at least 2022...

As a travel agent, I probably wont book a trip there in 2021, because there are rumors that Broadway could be gone until Fall 2021. I have a drama group that has a 2021 credit at a downtown hotel because they cancelled their 2020 trip, and obviously they are depressed now because they will probably never be able to use it. I have hundreds of dollars in deposits at NYC restaurants that Ill probably never see again, with thousands in hotel deposits that are getting more and more sketchy by the day, for trips I booked last spring...

What is u doing, NYC?

I meant to say the culture. You know, walking around seeing the sights, seeing thousands of folks in Times Square, enjoying the Nightlife? I mentioned restaurants, Broadway, and the museums...

If NYC tourism is dead, that hurts restaurants, bars, museums, cultural sites . . . Everything. Why don't you ask your local restaurant how they would do with zero out of town traffic?

Anyone who is from nyc would never step foot in Times Square lol

This.

People who live in NYC don't care about Broadway or times square or other tourist bullshit.

Now the real victim here are the adult theaters who have the naked chicks walking around advertising. How are those businesses gonna survive?

I'm pretty sure the concern is the sudden loss of the billions of dollars they bring into the city, not New Yorkers not being able to go to Times Square.

I'll bet most business owners care about all that "tourist bullshit."

Yeah, I don't think that's remotely true.

Nobody likes being near Times Square, but people will suffer through it to go see their shows.

The people who are just dismissive and think that less tourism means their cities will be better seem pretty ignorant about economics. NYC is NYC because you can walk down any avenue to shop, eat, and have fun. If 60% of restaurants are shuttered, that means the only ones left are big chains you can find in Podunk, USA, and with Broadway and museums closing up shop, your city loses it's charm.

It'll just become a barren wasteland of depression, joblessness, and crime. You'll pay less because your neighborhood has a bunch of folks surrounding a barrel on the sidewalk, and the restaurant on the bottom floor has a "FOR LEASE" sign.

Uh...those cheesy musicals bring the weird crowds, and a lot of those crowds have money. Those folks will visit the bars afterwards, eat at the restaurants beforehand, and spend the night at the downtown hotels.

The show may not be for you, but I'm sure you'd appreciate all of the thriving business around it.

Did you mean transparent? I'd need an urban dictionary definition for transplant topic.

Broadway has been pretty dull lately imo. Not every 80s Or nostalgia movie needs to be turned into a musical.

I'm not happy about it, but I also acknowledge that the Covid death rate in the US is extremely disproportionate.

NYC needs a reality check and its unfortunate that many small businesses are the ones who will suffer the most.

Broadway and theater will be fine when it reopens. There is always a demand and they will get the funding they need from outside sources.

museums are usually free anyway and they operate mainly and mostly on donations and boosters. That wont change much either.

there is a lot of old money in NYC. The main public library received tons of money from the vanderbilts and the carnegies still to this day.

real estate will take a huge hit, but real estate in NYC is mainly owned by property companies anyway - fuck them. Theres no reason the cost per square foot in midtown should be $300 a square foot.
