Especially for such a major system. Demanding regular internet checks to play games the customer bought. The nerve.

As somebody who doesn't buy xboxes ever, I was really looking forward to the shitstorm it would have caused. I was a bit disappointed that they backed down from their dumbass failed attempt. Even though it's ultimately a good thing they did back down.

In an always-online world, it's a reasonable move. People, and arguably internet infrastructure, weren't quite ready for it then.

I honestly hate it. That said, Nintendo's thing is different for a few reasons. They're only pulling it with NES/SNES games. If they tried to pull that with EVERY switch game you can bet people would not be happy.

Nintendo should simply sell the retro games as an option, AND rent them out Netflix-style as they're doing, and customers can choose whether to rent or buy.

Xbox wanted to try this:
To synchronize licenses, the console would be required to connect to the internet once every 24 hours; if the console could not connect, all games would be disabled until the console was connected again.

Even Adobe products don't require such frequent phoning home

They were doing it so game publishers wouldn't have to. M$ took the heat then the publishers did it anyways.

yes. consumers can be dumb too. Anyway if you do enough anti-consumer stuff you will eventually run the market dry and break it

Actually it would skip the phoning home if the disk was in the drive. People keep forgetting the details of the drm. You could eject the disc and keep playing. The online check was there mostly to make sure you didn't sell the disc for those with transferrable licenses.

All they did prior to launch was disable the feature to play without the disc in the drive. All the rest of the drm was still there and nobody noticed.

Yes, because Sony and Nintendo do nothing at all that is completely anti-consumer also. Locking players out of games for exclusive hording and preventing cross platform play, and selling literal untouched ports for $60 that rarely go on sale and selling fucking overpriced cardboard is so pro-consumer.

If someone can afford a $400+ console at launch, i'm pretty confident that they have an internet connection. This is such a stupid thing to still complain about, how many years later?

People with metered connections. People who are traveling. People in regions where the systems internet features haven't been established yet.
