Tipping is weird here in Canada, the machines will prompt for a % when tipping (10/15/20 usually) but it's based on the post tax total.

Tipping on tax is stupid Imo.

You realize that either way, you pay their employee's salaries. The cost is passed on to you wrapped up in the cost of the food, product, or service provided. Places that expect tipping are telling you up front they didn't include that in their costs so that you can provide what you believe was fair pay for the service provided separately. If you abuse that and demand service and provide no pay for the service (no matter what), you're the one making yourself look bad.

And like you said, even with proper base pay tipping should still be a custom.

I have a feeling many who bitch about tipping wouldnt even tip in the first place, even if the service was excellent.

Oh I understand but you don't seem to be aware that there are numerous "service jobs" where people aren't tipped. Teachers are considered a service job when's the last time you tipped a teacher?

The fact is tipping as a means to make up a server's poor wages has become such a part of our culture that even as wages have risen we now consider it impolite not to do it.

Tipping is fine. I don't mind it, and I tip accordingly to the level of service I get.

Like the situations where we tip and don't tip are strange. Like when i worked at Spectrum the techs couldn't take tips and like the UPS or FedEx guys don't stick around for tips. You dont tip nurses either.

exactly. A guy drives your pizza to you 5 mins away, tip him. Meanwhile, when I worked retail I spent hours sometimes helping people with weddings, parties, funerals, etc...I couldnt accept tips even if they wanted to tip me and most people wouldnt think to tip me.

I was a pizza delivery driver in college. Its the easiest fucking job. Get pizza, look at map thats divided into grids, go to address and come back.

I didnt even speed and across the whole delivery area was probably a max of 3-5 miles. Plus it was rare someone got cold pizza those hot bags kept em hot for a while. I didnt complain but there wasnt a situation where i needed a 5-10 dollar tip but i didnt refuse it lol

Calling teaching a service job is wishy washy

but even if you lie and do your point still falls down

Take the UK for example were waitresses are paid min wage.

Teachers are paid a min salary of 25,700+ even on their first year. With most earning considerably more.

If Waitresses made that then maybe you could argue they don't need tips

As it stands not tipping waitresses in the UK is the difference between whether they eat 1-3 times a day and whether they can turn the radiator on when its freezing cold at night

WTF is a tenner to you? its day to day life altering to people in service jobs who have earned that tip, especially during Covid

You're a horrible person if you refuse to give one
