Bootstrapping does work. It is all about the drive of the individual if they really want to do better or not.

tipping culture is literally "I will give you extra money if you work hard, and less if you under-perform". It's like the exact opposite of anything socialistic.

Both things are about rich people saving money, imo.

Bootstraps mentality encourages people to value financial independence meaning they're less likely to support welfare programs and wealthy people have to pay less taxes.
Tipping means you don't have to pay as employees much because your customers pay them.

Customers always pay employees, tipping just cuts out the middle man and avoids sales tax and extra income tax. Removing it just means it'll be equally as expensive to go out to eat and servers will make less money.

Serving tables is one of the best ways for someone who lacks hard skills to get a leg up, don't understand why people get so upset about that.

Tipping has become a social norm is why. Even though it used to be generally limited to the wealthy. Lol, the number of people who think their owed like $10 for grabbing peoples food and drinks on this forum alone says it all.

People really need to stop using socialism to describe capitalist things or things that have nothing to do with either (like government programs). It renders the word meaningless. Is it related in some way to workers controlling the means of production? If not don't call it socialist. It's getting to the point where you can't even talk about socialism in English because the word is becoming devoid of meaning.

Right?

There's nothing socialist about how a private business wants to make their pay structure. No one is forcing you to tip, it's just general consensus that you're an asswipe if you don't

I'm not upset by tipping, I was just saying its a way for employers to not have to pay employees as much. I've been a pizza delivery guy on and off since 2006 for the exact reason you mentioned. it pays better than other low skill jobs. But its always been the customers who pay most of what I make, not pizza hut.

Thank you! Sheesh.

Read the actual Federal Minimum Wage Law posted nearly everywhere and you'll see it right in your face.

Companies can charge less because min. wage is wage+tips.

Tips are also TAXABLE income.

If wage+tips is lower than minimum wage, the company must foot the rest of it.

It works in the servers favor if the tips are HUGE. But you should GIVE, not tip. Because giving is not taxable.

Just look on any american bank note, "For all debts, public or private"

Restaurants have a notoriously low margin of profit. Let's be real here, if tipping weren't a thing servers would be making minimum wage, maybe slightly more and pizza delivery drivers probably wouldn't even be a thing.

And as I said, it's a pay structure that works in the favor of the server and the customer. If I were to just increase my menu prices to pay my wait staff an hourly wage i also have to charge you for sales tax on that increase, I'll have to pay revenue tax on it, and the server will have to pay income tax on it. You're talking about very significant amounts of money over time.

I've never advocated for abolishing tipping. Why would I do that when I was working for tips as recently as march?

Some restaurants take the tips or do a "pool tips" thing, negating the server's hard work.
