I remember Ron Paul supporters wanted to do that

We had public schools before the DoE existed right? What would be different if the Department of Education was abolished?

My concern would be for things such as IDEA, which protects some of our most vulnerable student populations.

I don't know how things such as Title I funding would work. It predates the Department of Education (which I believe started under Carter), so presumably it would be overseen by a different department.

Would the Office of Civil Rights just cover all of these issues?

The impact would primarily be in throwing out all the built up infrastructure in terms of dosh allocation, regulatory, and enforcement duties, which would mean a bureaucratic cluster fuck.
