The FBI thwarted what they described as a plot to violently overthrow the government and kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and federal prosecutors are expected to discuss the alleged conspiracy later Thursday.

The alleged plot involved reaching out to members of a Michigan militia, according to a federal affidavit filed Thursday.

"Several members talked about murdering 'tyrants' or 'taking' a sitting governor," an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit. "The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message."

The affidavit was filed hours after a team of FBI agents raided a Hartland Township home Wednesday and comes amid an ongoing investigation into the death of a Metro Detroit man killed during a shootout with FBI agents.

In recent weeks, the state-owned Michigan governor's residence received security upgrades, including the construction of a new perimeter fence.

The "perimeter security and other safety upgrades" were planned out last year, Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown said in early September. They were scheduled to start in the early spring but were delayed until recently because of the pandemic, she said.

The cost for the "maintenance" projects at the Lansing residence, which was recommended by the Michigan State Police and the state Department of Technology, Management and Budget, was about $1.1 million, Brown said.

"As a matter of practice, were constantly reviewing security protocols and adjusting as needed," said Shanon Banner, spokeswoman for the Michigan State Police, in early September. "We dont comment on specific threats against the governor nor do we provide information about security measures."

This. I cannot stress enough that if you are a minority of any sort that now would be a good time to buy some sort of firearm to defend yourself. Learn to use it, talk to your family, friends, neighbors about community defense and mutual aid. Join whatever gun organization you can find other than the NRA (which gives zero fucks about minorities or their rights), something like the SRA, The John Brown Gun Club, The Fred Hampton Gun Club. Search around, there are left leaning and/or minority focused shooting organizations out there. Best case scenario, things calm down and you'll be trained and have allies should shit go bad again. Worst case scenario, you will know how to defend yourself and will have friends and allies to help you.

I got a couple of guns shortly after reading the story about hysterectomies at the border. Being Latino, I dont feel safe for me or my family, so I got some guns for the first time in my life. Too bad ammo is so hard to find.

And remind me again how many people were injured during this non-event that never happened and likely never would have happened? You can compare that to the people killed during the protests, the countless people injured in the protests, and the buildings destroyed in the protests. The "militia" were a handful of basement-dwellers trying to talk tough, while the real destruction is being done by the groups who are out in the streets.

While the glorified D&D players probably never posed any real danger, it's still probably for the best that they were arrested because you can't have people making threats.
