You could just tell them you're having this side effect and ask for a different prescription.

You don't have to try and make a federal case of it.

I did tell them about the side affect, the most recent response was that they can give me viagra or cialis.

Is it a possible side effect or is it expressly done for that purpose?

Is the person able to perceive reality and be culpable for their own actions?

Usually no.

"Percieve reality" is a pretty loaded term

The side effect is a possible outcome

I'm not planning to sue or anything. I just feel it's scummy they didnt mention it before I had the chance to deliberate

okay, so the doctor was bad. he/she is obligated (by professional standards) to inform you of side effects.
The last time I was in the hospital they made sure to do that, but the warning I got was that I might get restless leg syndrome, which is barely a fucking problem relatively

It's highly unethical and there are multiple publications about this type of eugenics. But this is in reference to prescribing a medication or performing surgery specifically to suppress an individual's reproductive capability. My major society (ACOG) released a publication about sterilization in the mentally handicapped, or for individuals with limited decision-making capacity who also have a genetic disorder.

A great resource to give you an idea about physician organizational stances:
https://rb.gy/cbfaiz
https://rb.gy/97hkbf

What you're talking about sounds more like a side effect of a medication designed to treat a completely different disease, and that side effect was poorly communicated to you. This is by no means illegal or unsafe, especially considering that you have decision-making capacity and just need to have a discussion with a physician about switching to a different medication if the impotence* bothers you. Also, make sure you speak with a physician, an actual doctor, and not some garbage know-nothing nurse practitioner. They're notorious for not knowing a damn thing and prescribing weird shit willy-nilly.

EDIT: I had to shorten links because of the site's character limit. One is from ACOG, one is from the AMA. Both are reputable.

Yeah, I can imagine that dealing with the side effects is hard. Unfortunately you're in this weird balancing act of managing your disease to where you can function well enough, and also dealing with medication side effects to where you still have an acceptable quality of life. Hopefully you're not on risperidone since that shit is notorious for galactorrhea. But then again if it's the only med that works, what are you gonna do?

EDIT: To answer your question about if it's permanent. SSRIs are notorious for decreasing libido, i.e. your sexual drive. They are not known for causing erectile dysfunction, preventing you from orgasm, or decreasing your sperm count. Usually, whatever your sex drive feels like after the 6 week mark when the SSRI has hit it's therapeutic level is about hat you can expect while you're on it. It usually doesn't get better. Talk to your prescribing physician, and if you've been unfortunate enough to be treated by an NP then demand to be treated by a physician.

We have a 30 year old schizophrenic patient who has sexual delusions and insist his neighbor is "making eyes" at him, but is worried his erection isn't strong enough. He has never spoken to the woman. He has asked for viagra in multiple occasions. He "needs more semen".

Should the psychiatrist comply, TC?
Why are you putting me in this dilemma?

I guess he shouldnt be given viagra TC, the way you put it seems so clear now
