While platformer combat that features high and low attacks isn't unique, Castlevania does it... Metroid 2 and beyond does it; Contra does it!

But there's a key difference, and that's the way enemies interact with you - In Zelda 2 the complex enemies felt like a duel, a fight to see who the best is (Miyamoto based the combat on liveplay 'shadow samurais' and was the inspiration for Shadow Link as well). Viewtiful Joe does the same, only adds the Slowdown/Speedup mechanic to act as your special moves in the same way Link has up and down thrust and spells. It's better in VJ2 since there's more interactive and difficult enemies.
