Some of that, but there are also some who legally immigrated here who resent those who don't go through the same process.

I know Latinos who basically denounce their roots and try extremely hard to westernize and adapt to American culture, they're looking for acceptance because that seems to be the only way to get ahead and provide a better life for your family.

I'm not saying a lot of Latinos are Trumpers, but a lot are constantly seeking validation from The White Man.

Many Hispanics have worked extremely hard (and spent a lot of time and money) to immigrate to this country legally. They support Trump because he's made great strides in improving and streamlining the process for legal immigration while simultaneously cracking down on illegal immigration.

Is there a reason hispanics should automatically not support Trump? Think it through and maybe you'll find an answer. There are legit criticisms of the president, but nothing in terms of his policies seem to negatively affect your average hispanic voter more so than that of any other race.

I think it's partly this, partly an attempt to fit in (since Republicans have cornered the market on the "more American" party brand), and partly the "fuck you, got mine" attitude laid bare.

My gf is Hispanic, and she has at least two relatives who came here illegally. They married Americans, got their papers, and are now ardent Trump supporters who shit-talk illegal immigrants without a shred of sympathy. It'd be funny if it weren't so god damn infuriating.

Also a very good way to look at it. I'm Middle Eastern, and there are a ton of Arabs who adopt this same philosophy - especially the Christian ones.

Hispanic is a broad term. A lot of people with Latino blood are descended from Spaniards raping native women during their invasion of Central/Southern America.

These mixed race children, the "Mestizo" would go on to marry in white/native families alike. Many Hispanic people are incredibly close to being white, and predominantly reside in the Southwest US

anecdotal case study 1: best friend's mom.

presumably supports him chiefly because she's a retired police officer. work included conducting internal investigations pertaining to corruption within the department, energy which she has since channeled into being an adamant critic of occasional corruption by officials in the predominantly democratic town she resides. work also involved combating sex trafficking, which might explain why the human trafficking aspect of the qanon conspiracy theory resonates with her.

she also lives in a border town where the "real" minimum wage is somewhere in the neighborhood of $4/hr because of the amount of work done off the books by undocumented immigrants, making it very difficult for unskilled american workers to get a foot in the door (including her son while he lived there).

anecdotal case study 2: best friend, afro-hispanic.

not a traditional conservative. probably overdosed on his mother's qanon conspiracy theories, but has also been persuaded by conservative talking points on social media in general. his father's also privately a trump supporter, so perhaps having two parents that support trump lends that much more credence in his eyes. historically pretty liberal, remains socially and fiscally moderate but opposes "the democratic establishment" and "the liberal media".

anecdotal case study 3: good friend.

immigrant from a south american country, the economy and financial standing of which has been destroyed by state socialist economics. historically libertarian, but rallied behind trump for pragmatic reasons ("a liberarian will never be elected"), and found himself embraced by the local far right after his open support for trump made him a pariah among most of his old group of friends. can occasionally be found at infowars rallies.

anecdotal case study 4: old friend. 4channer, lowkey /pol/ user.

My friend was a minor in Mexican-American studies and broke it down for me once years ago.

Legal Immigrants are usually catholic so their views tend to lean towards the right. Also there's this resentment of illegal immigrants from legal immigrants because they had to wait or pay and these people are getting in illegally for free. Even though its hard as fuck to become a citizen.

That's really it. There seems to be some strange form of "collectivism" that goes on when referring to minorities as if they aren't individuals.

This seems to be a fallacy mostly liberal white people fall into. I grew up in Phoenix and that type of thinking doesn't seem to exist. I currently live in San Francisco, and this is standard thinking - that POC can't vote for Trump or they are traitors or something.

Strange thing is that Phoenix is full of racists, and Frisco is full of SJWs....but the above POV sounds like something only a racist would think...it's ironic as fuck ain't it?

It basically comes down to "Christians". Christianity (or whatever you want to call cherrypicking Bible verses while ignoring the rest) is big with Hispanic countries. Stemming from them being colonies of Spain, which pushed Catholicism really, really, really, really hard. At levels no one expects~.

I do know this firsthand because of my late stepmother's family. Her brother who supported Obama but turned around and voted for Trump is a hardcore "Christian".

Another big factor, I can verify as someone from Florida, is that a good chunk of the Hispanic population are Cubans. Cubans loathe Castro. Castro was "communist" so they seek the opposite of communism. Which is of course, the oligarchy bullshit the Republicans peddle.

So yeah. Chalk it up to abortions and Castro.

If they're here illegally they can't vote anyway, making it a moot point. And if they are here legally, they don't have to worry about deportation policies -- although it's worth noting that Obama deported more illegals than any other president so if that was their biggest concern, why would they support Obama?
