In response to the thread title, you know almost everything that happens in these movies is "real", right? In the original, the only people acting were Borat and a few others. Everyone else was led to believe he's a reporter from Kazakhstan. I imagine the same will go for this movie as well.

People know about him now. Though he was also able to get sitting politicians to say ridiculous things for his tv show so idk

This is baked into the plot of the new movie though. He's become such a well known, recognizable figure that the character has to pretend to dress up as somebody else to avoid detection.

the audience effect can also be powerful. for instance pam was in on it but iirc her guards and most of the staff not involved with filming were not.

it's like his stunt where he teabagged eminem from the air during the mtv awards i think. seems like only eminem was in on it while the people around him were not.

This is honestly probably the best approach as well, since the reactions are more or less genuine, which can really sell a scene if you're going for something akin to "shock and awe".

IIRC Pamela Anderson was in on it but Kid Rock wasn't and they had a fight about it later and broke up over it.
