Super Metroid is a great game, but I never felt stuck or lost when playing Zero Mission and I felt that all the time when playing Super Metroid. Also the music in Zero Mission is better.

One thing that Super Metroid does win in though is the story.

you're probably going to get a lot of flack for this, because one of the main complaints of zero mission among longtime fans of the series was that it was way too hand-holdy and the exploration aspect of the series had been abandoned.

It told you where to go, but you were free to ignore it and look for bombable walls.

Other things

-The wall jumping is absolute garbage. There's a reason why it isn't a huge part of the game.

-The controls are pretty janky in general. Swinging from the grapple beam sucks too, and using the space jump isn't as bad but you have to get used to it.

-There are some dumb parts in Super Metroid. Some that stuck out to me are

-The glass room in Maridia that you have to use a power bomb to break and continue with the game. The game gives you a very subtle hint that you are able to break it. This is just bad design tbh
-Getting the Spring Ball/morph ball jump. This is totally cryptic. I don't think you actually need it to beat the game, though, so whatever.
-Similarly, getting to Ridley area. This one isn't too bad, but I'm not sure what allows you to make it through the acid to his area. If it is the Gravity Suit, the game makes it pretty clear that the Gravity Suit is good for jumping through water and tells you nothing about making you invulnerable to acid.
-The room before Ridley where you fight those two space pirates that reflect attacks. I have no idea how you are supposed to win against them. You basically just jump around and shoot and sometimes it works.

Overall I really enjoyed the game though, Metroid games post-GB Metroid II are some of the best out there.

Literally all Zero Mission does is give you a direction. I'm not sure how anyone would consider this a bad thing. It's not like Super Metroid is an open-world game. It is pretty linear, you are just expected to fumble through the game to find out where you are supposed to go.

For the most part where you are supposed to go is self-explanatory, but sometimes it is not, as described above.

This is basically why I share your opinion on this. I've played through both games and I agree that SM's approach of having a more open map vs "here are some random breakable blocks that you can use to skip stuff" way that ZM lets you skip things, I just can't go back to SM's control; ZM just feels so much tighter and responsive in comparison

Both are great, but I give the edge to Super.

I think Super does sequence breaking better (although ZM is good in this regard too) and has more longevity as a result. Probably because there are a bunch of unintentional breaks in Super that are interesting and really open things up, while ZM's are mostly deliberate (and more controlled as a result).

ZM certainly makes a bunch of smaller improvements that really add up though, like the streamlined controls and better map (it actually shows doors!).

Zero Mission was too hand-holdy for my tastes. At least Fusion had an excuse for it's linearity.

lol no. SM is objectively the best Metroid game. Literally the only thing wrong with SM is the second save station past the point of no return in Tourian.

ZM is too hand-holdey, has worse physics, and while the Zero Suit segment is fun, everything after Mother Brain feels tacked on.

Fusion isn't even a proper Metroid game.

Yeah I don't mean to put down Zero Mission but it's clearly not Super Metroid. And the extra segment of ZM feels tacked on. I haven't played ZM and Fusion in around 4 years but the linear thing really pushes both games back when you compare it to SM.

All are still pretty damn good. I just remember thinking that Fusion didn't 'hold up' as much when I compare it to my first time playing it 15 odd years ago. Zero Mission is a good update on the original game.

Yeah idk what the general consensus on this segment was, but for me it made the game go from a borderline 10/10 to a flat, unrounded 9/10.

Also not bringing this up as a definitive argument for SM being the best 2D Metroid overall, but compared to the other ones it's indisputably the champ in terms of aesthetic & sound.

I said I liked Super Metroid better for years after Zero Mission game out, but never actually went back to play it until recently.

It's still great obviously, but I think Zero Mission fine tuned a lot of the controls and things. I think I probably like Zero Mission better now.

They are both top tier, though.

I don't think Zero Mission being less cryptic is enough to make it better. Yes, Super Metroid was generally a more frustrating experience, but it was the better game overall. I feel like it's one of those games where you begin to appreciate it more on subsequent playthroughs in a way you don't get when replaying Zero Mission.

Zero Mission works for what it is, a mobile Metroid experience thats easily enjoyed in short bursts on car rides or waiting rooms, etc. Its a great game, but I wouldnt put it above Super Metroid.

i prefer Fusion to Zero Mission, tbh. >_>
