To be clear: Biden presented himself coherently, calmly, factually, and with a level of aplomb that I dont think Id have been able to keep. Biden proved that hes capable of being presidential under fire. Thats a significant plus. Nonetheless, I cant say that Biden came out on top - a good fight has a winner because there was a real battle. When you get a team thrashing another team unequivocally, to the point where its just absurd, thats less of a victory and more just an uneven engagement. The President of the United States didnt show up to the debate. Donald Trump did. He was rude, abrasive, ignorant, and inclined to lie and demean that office with his performance. He wants his supporters to stand by on election day. He refused to criticise white supremacists. He went for Joe Bidens son instead of focusing on the political landscape of the United States. He dismissed the record on Covid-19 and outright told Joe Biden that hed have seen two million people die, instead of the 200,000 who have died under his administration. And he interrupted his opponent and even argued with the goddamn moderator throughout the entire debate. Biden didnt win. Trump lost, and badly. But the debate as a whole was a complete shambles - with a respectful and coherent opponent, then we could say that Biden won. But a dignified and smart individual doesnt win a mud fight against a toddler throwing a tantrum, and thats all we saw tonight. Nobody won, but lord knows that the United States lost. This is what the Presidency is now? If you asked me who won, I would say Biden and it wasn't even close.
