You know the drill, the big evil lord of bad stuff was killed or imprisoned centuries ago and now he's back!
Their motivation and dialogue usually comes down to stuff like, "Let the Age of Darkness begin!"



I suppose Darkness from Legend is probably the most complex character of this nature. He's tormented by his lust for the princess and her innocence even though he's bound to do evil. But even then, he's not really the "dark lord" per se as his unseen father (Satan?) occupies that role in the movie.

Emet Selch from FFXIV definitely counts. he's introduced as this immensely powerful ancient being that manipulates people from the shadows to bring about calamities and by the time his storyline concludes you actually feel bad for him and completely understand why he does what he does.
