Nobody going to a play thinks it's unscripted and real. They go to be entertained. It's the same with wrestling fans. Nobody other than little kids believe they're throwing real full force punches.

It was real enough when Stone Cold Steve Austin broke his neck.
It was real enough with Hayabusa broke his spine and was paralysed.
It was real enough when Mick Foley was chokeslammed from the top of a cage and hit the ground so hard he sneezed out his own tooth.

Much like wrestling, the real appeal of a stageplay is the potential for an epic botch.

Remember when some guy made a pretty good YT video about how wrestling was entertaining specifically because of the fake and scripted nature...

And then it turned out that particular "some guy" was a serial sexual abuser so I don't really want to link to the video.

Movies were never predicated on fans believing it was a shoot, wrestling was. Since kayfabe broke the number of fans is laughable low. More people used to watch local shows in individual cities than they do for national cable broadcasts now.

People watch now like they watch ballet or they like the freak show aspect of the hardcore bullshit.

I like (liked) wrestling but there are better ways to invest the little time I do have to consume media.

Wrestling is in a weird place for the impressionable, because there is a legit "real" competitive wrestling, and has been for centuries, that to offer a form of entertainment and call it "professional wrestling" is tantamount to scripting baseball games and calling it "professional baseball".

That said, in the age of the Internet, the number of impressionable people is far fewer. (edit: at least on the subject of wrestling)

Those poor kids who went and saw the globetrotters and thought it was real basketball only to get schooled on the playground. That's why they went to do crack, because they couldn't smoke anyone on the court.

Wrestling is fundamentally different from those other activities considering that:

A) Actual wrestling doesn't have a widespread following (certainly not anything close to pro wrestling)

B) Those other things are team activities, whereas pro wrestling features individuals. More importantly, there IS precedent. Instead of citing baseball, you should have brought up boxing where the system is largely rigged with handpicked opponents based on vague criteria, highly public feuds, and outright rigged results. Of course, that's not "sports entertainment," people actually buy into that and gamble on things that line the mob's pockets.

Another good example might be MMA, although that kinda shows *why* scripting makes things more interesting since CM Punk -- a guy with no prior record -- was chosen to compete and we watched his long journey to become a MMA fighter... only for him to get his ass kicked in his first outing.... and then lose the second fight, too. How much more fun and exciting would have story have been if he actually won his first match and his journey had an actual payoff?
