In the mid 1820's, there was a "pussy challenge", similar to today's viral challenges (tide pod, ice bucket etc). A man would find and catch a feral cat and attempt to copulate with it, to the raucous cries of encouragement from his friends (this is also where we get "cat calling"). The challenge was so popular people began referring to vaginas as "pussy".
