these controls on the joycon are sooo bad. i cant even sneak on the plants because the stics are so damn sensitive. if you push just even a little too hard you bust into a full sprint. thes controls are uuuughhhh

My girlfriend has been playing this and won't stop complaining about the controls.

I told her they were originally really bad so at least they kept the same spirit.

But is there really no fix for it? She's only playing handheld does it get better with a controller?

Yeah with how frustrating I'm finding both the controls and the camera, I think I'm just gonna get enough stars to beat the game and then call it on this one. Great game back in the day but I am just not having any fun with it in 2020.

On the Wii, I had a Classic Controller that basically did this. Try to push it a little, and it went into a full on sprint. GameCube controller worked a little better though. Maybe try a different controller, like a Pro Controller?

Pro is still no N64 stick. A fresh N64 analog stick with the original game allows for pretty fine control of Mario's speed. Pro has the same "compressed" range of speeds, although joy cons are worse.

I'm also fairly certain there's a few frames of input delay, and the game wasn't built with that in mind (unlike modern games which pretty much expect some delay from your display).

I've been playing handheld and not really had any problems, even on wall kick will work where you have to cross the ice bridge with the fucked off camera I just went slooooow.

It is pretty touchy, only thing that bothers me is the damn cannons... have to readjust like five times if I want to shoot on to a pole to grab it.

I just beat it with 120 stars in a few days. The game is a lot easier than I remembered. Had to get used to treating the right analog like C buttons, rather than modern games that allow you to move the camera exactly as you please.

My biggest issue going back to it was that exiting a level takes you back to the castle lobby, and that the damn fly and get 8 red coins level on the top floor would bring you outside the castle if you failed. Took me a few tries to beat it (flying in that game isnt my strong point), and every time Id fail, it would take over a minute just to get back to it.

I remembered having a lot more trouble on the Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride in the past. Also, finding the 8th red coin on Cool Cool Mountain was a pain in the ass.

Still a very fun game, IMO.

Yeah joycons are terrible. I mostly stuck with my pro controller. Its better but not much.

Just crawl past the plants. I agree the controls are horrible though. The camera is even worse.

I'm not getting a switch until they fix the joycons.

I got all 120 stars but yeah, 80% of my deaths were at the fault of the game's appalling camera work. There's one star at the Wet Dry World where you had to cross a long narrow plank with two electro balls. It took me literally 10 minutes and many falls to finally cross the plank because of the camera

Beat Mario 64 the other day. The controls are really bad on the Switch unfortunately but you get used to it. The sensitivity is nuts.

Uh... whats the deal with the plants? I just run and dive at them or do a slide attack. The controls are problematic but you should probably just kick the plants asses.

Pretty much all modern joystick controls are like this and it baffles me. 1% of the stick is walk, 99% is run. Or they don't use analogue input at all and make you hold another button to run. WHY.

It still plays fine with an N64 controller.

I ripped through the game with the pro controller, the controls aren't any different from N64 imo. Just a stick instead of c-buttons.
