Welcome to the King of Fighters 2020 (NOT MERCS) Simulated Character Battle Tournament!

The game is simple. The two* listed characters are placed in an (imaginary) location with a variety of (imaginary) environments, kind of like a picture in a child's schoolbook that describes different types of geological features. Within a ten mile radius, there is an (imaginary) urban downtown, exurbs, plains, snow-clad mountains at the edge, dry plains, etc. Fighters start wherever is most appropriate for them, but feel increasingly compelled to seek out their opponent and fight. Strong-willed fighters can try to hold out in their chosen environment for longer... eventually, all will succumb and actively search for the other to battle.

To participate, just vote in bold for whichever character you believe will win. Giving reasoning is optional, but please be polite and read what others have said and carefully make your decision. I'll ping the nominators (they can opt out) to give arguments if they wish.

seems like Megumin is kind of early Dresden, with high power coupled with low precision. Unfortunately for her, Dresden has had a long time to improve since then. This fight seems like it'd start with a big boom not quite centered on Dresden, blasting him against a wall, making him yell "Fuck!" and maybe burning out some of his protective rings (which are specifically designed to protect against force and heat). Then he forms a shield and braces himself against the second act. Then he finds Megumin's unconscious body, laughs "That's it?" and banishes her to the shadow realm.

Mainly due to surviving the nuke shot, through one of a myriad number of ways (opening up a portal to a different area, illusionary clone, magical redirection, and even maybe just barely surviving due to facing head on (dresden can be dense like that, and might fail this way))

This has a kind of equivalent fight in the books, Skin Game - Dresden vs Hannah Ascher. Beating raw raging power with proper thought.

Mind you Megumin won't be killed, Dresden isn't like that, but when you rely on the one shot strategy, you better make sure that one shot wins.

I feel like Dresden has this one. There's a chance Megumin gets lucky, catches Dresden completely off-guard, and one-shots him. Any other scenario goes poorly for her; she can't survive Dresden's attacks if he gets the drop on her, and Dresden has plenty of ways to survive Explosion if he's expecting an attack (and since Megumin can only cast it once, he might even be able to just tank it anyway).

How powerful are Dresden's shields? Megumin's explosion gets really strong.

It depends on preperation and the like kamikaze, but as said, that's probably the worst case scenario on Dresden's end, having to tank it. It'd be vastly more likely to disable it via using magic to redirect some of the force (maybe to throw him away from the blast radius), to rip open a portal to hide behind, to not even be in the area in the first place, via misdirection. In current books, it takes a really powerful hit to sucker punch Dresden out.

There are ways Megumin could win with her one shot, but the odds are way stacked against, due to the nature of the fight.

Dresden is a fraud but not enough of a fraud to lose to Megumin. He can take an Extreme Consequence if it comes down to it.
